Bears GM Ryan Poles addresses comparisons between Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels
Through five games this season, it has been Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, the No. 2 pick, who has been the talk of the league over the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, Chicago Bears quarterback, Caleb Williams.
Both Daniels and Williams won the Heisman Trophy during their collegiate career, in 2023 and 2022, respectively, and as the top two selections in the draft, their careers will forever be compared to one another.
In five career games, Daniels has a completion percentage of 77.1%, throwing for 1,135 yards, with four touchdowns and two interceptions. He's also added 300 yards on 57 carries with an additional four touchdowns on the ground. Daniels, led by first-year head coach Dan Quinn and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, has the Commanders atop the NFC East with a 4-1 record, while some media outlets begin the conversation if he should be in consideration for the NFL's MVP award after five games.
While Williams did not get off to the blazing start that Daniels did, he has seemed to turn a corner the past couple of games as he continues to grow and develop with offensive coordinator Shane Waldron. The comparisons are surely not to slow down any time soon, and with the Bears in London to take on the Jaguars this Sunday, general manager Ryan Poles was asked about his evaluation of Williams in comparison to the start Daniels has gotten off to.
"The human side of it is you want your guy to just take off and roll, but everyone's journey is gonna be different," Poles said, via Courtney Cronin. "I think the important thing is for Caleb to understand that as well and run his own race, and he's done that well in terms of just focusing on how can I get better, how can I put our team in a position to win games."
Hearing Poles speak on the importance of Williams sticking to himself and not letting the outside talk get to his head or his game is key. For as long as they are in the league and under center for two teams who are in dire need of a long-term franchise quarterback, Williams and Daniels will be compared. The stats are one topic of conversation, but team success, reaching the playoffs, and potential championships will be the biggest proving grounds of them all.
