What the Bears are getting in new offensive coordinator Declan Doyle
The Chicago Bears found their new offensive coordinator in Declan Doyle, who has served as the Denver Broncos tight ends coach for the past two years.
Doyle, 28, got his coaching start with Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints, where he served as an offensive assistant for the Saints from 2019-22. Doyle then followed Payton to Denver, where he's served as the tight ends coach for the past two seasons (2023-24).
But what exactly are the Bears getting in first-time offensive coordinator Doyle?
We spoke to Jon Heath of Broncos Wire, who gave us the rundown on what we can expect from the Bears' new offensive coordinator and why he could be a good fit for Chicago.
Who is Declan Doyle?
JH: The biggest thing to know about Doyle is that he comes from the Sean Payton coaching tree. After three years at the college level as an offensive assistant, Doyle got his start in the NFL when Payton hired him as an offensive assistant with the New Orleans Saints, a position he held from 2019-2022 before following Payton to Denver in 2023.
What was Declan's impact on the Broncos' offense?
JH: It's hard to provide much insight on Doyle and his direct impact on Denver's offense because he's rarely spoken about and Payton gets the shine as the offensive guru (Ben Johnson will probably be the same way in Chicago). But the fact that Payton brought him with him to the Broncos has to be a good sign. And while Denver got little production out of the tight end room in 2024, that's probably not a reflection on Doyle's coaching ability. In fact, one could argue that he got the most out of the little had had to work with at the position (TE is the position of need for the Broncos in 2025).
Why do you think Declan could be a good fit for the Bears?
JH: As a tight ends coach, he was involved in both the passing game and ground game, so he should have a firm grasp of the offense. Ben Johnson has his own scheme, of course, but he probably likes the idea of gleaning some of Payton's offense. With Johnson calling plays, Doyle's inexperience shouldn't be a concern. He's a young, promising coach that comes from a good tree.
