Bears DT Gervon Dexter shares evaluation of his 2024 season
There was not much to be proud from the play of either the Chicago Bears' offensive or defensive lines during the 2024 season, but some players showed flashes of potential. One of the biggest young names who got attention for his play was second-year defensive tackle Gervon Dexter.
Dexter enjoyed early success this season, but when Andrew Billings was lost with a torn pectoral muscle, Dexter's production took a step back. With the team needing to focus on upgrading the defensive line, Dexter's ability will be a big part of how they choose to build the line with he and Montez Sweat as key pieces in the immediate future.
During his final interview scrum with the media this week, Dexter reflected on the season he had, saying he felt he had both ups and downs on the year, but feels he got better as a player.
"Pretty up and down," Dexter said. "I think I got better at some things, there's a lot more to improve on, more stuff I can get better at. I pretty much played in every scheme, I ran a 3-4, 4-3 in college, so I feel like I can play in any scheme."
While discussing any upcoming coaching changes, Dexter believes there's an opportunity for growth with anyone the team decides to bring in.
A second-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, Dexter totaled 51 tackles, six sacks, four stuffs, and two fumble recoveries in 2024. In the PFF grading metric, Dexter ended with a 70.3 grade overall for his play this season, grading out better in pass rush (66.7) in comparison to his run defense (61.1), but he still graded out at a respectable finish.
One of the bright young spots on the defense, the next coaching staff will have a versatile weapon in Dexter to use in whatever scheme they use next season.
