Bears CB Jaylon Johnson is done buying into the hype
Although the Chicago Bears went undefeated in the preseason and there's plenty of high expectations about their 2024 outlook cornerback Jaylon Johnson is not ready to buy into the hype.
Johnson, who signed a four-year, $76 million contract extension this offseason, is undoubtedly approaching the most hype and expectations since he was drafted by Chicago in 2020.
This is a Bears defense that's been hailed by their offensive teammates as a top-five unit in the league, and it's easy to see why with the influx of talent on the roster, including Johnson, defensive end Montez Sweat, cornerbacks Tyrique Stevenson and Kyler, among others.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Johnson addressed the preseason hype surrounding the Bears this season, where he believes it's a conversation that's been said before, so he is currently paying it no mind.
"I'm done buying into the hype, honestly," Johnson said. "I feel like I've said it before plenty of times. I've had some pretty good rosters and plenty of talented people in the locker rooms where [it's been said] 'Oh this is our year, this is our year."
Johnson would double down on his thoughts saying that he isn't moved by the hype surrounding this year's Bears team and all that matters is what happens on game day.
"Everything that we've got in this locker room sounds good, it seems good, but none of that matters," he said. "What matters is what we're going to do this weekend and from every Sunday or Monday, whatever game it is. That's when it matters. The preseason hype doesn't move me. We've all got to come in here and we've got to work, just top to bottom."
Johnson will be a key member of the Bears defense this year and will certainly contribute the team's overall success, however it only matters for him on game days.
