Bayern ready to make United rue ludicrous £5m transfer by signing ex-Red who’s ‘perfect’ for Amorim’s system
Alvaro Carreras’ career has gone from strength to strength since he departed Manchester United in May 2024.
The Spanish international began the 2023/2024 campaign on loan with Granada, having also spent the previous term with Preston North End. However, in January 2024, he was recalled by United, and despite Erik ten Hag having no senior left-backs available in his squad, Carreras was shipped off to Benfica for the second half of the season.
It was then that he really began to flourish. Gaining such crucial first-team minutes proved instrumental for the youngster’s development. Before you knew it, he looked like a seasoned professional – and one that would’ve undoubtedly strengthened the disjointed United side.
After Benfica decided to activate Carreras’ £5 million buy clause last year, he went on to cement his place as a starter. He now looks something of an undroppable figure for Bruno Lage.
Carreras has his pick of suitors if he opts to leave Benfica
Such stellar showings each week have caught the eyes of a host of top European clubs. Real Madrid were linked with Carreras, 21, towards the back end of last year, which prompted speculation that United would look to activate their buyback clause, believed to be in the region of £16.7m.
Now, Bayern Munich have – according to Record Portugal – added their names to the mix of his potential suitors amid concerns that Alphonso Davies may opt against signing a new deal at the Allianz.
The world-class fullback, also linked with United, is out of contract in June and is garnering widespread transfer interest. For Bayern, who have little control over Davies’ decision, they view Carreras as a suitable successor to the 24-year-old.
At the end of October, StatmanDave shared that the ex-Red had ‘averaged 0.60 goal-creating actions p90 over the last year, putting him in the top 1% of all full-backs across Europe’s top six leagues’, making him a ‘perfect’ left-wing back for Ruben Amorim’s newly implemented 3-4-3 system.
