Manchester United are edging closer to finalising the transfers of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, suggests Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl.

Saturday was a frustrating one for United fans, as the Red Devils lost the Community Shield showdown 7-6 on penalties despite producing an encouraging performance against Manchester City at Wembley.

However, off the pitch, United seemingly managed to taste success, finding breakthrough in their talks to sign both De Ligt and Mazraoui from Bayern.

The Dutch centre-back is set to join United in a deal worth €45million, plus €5m in add-ons. He has agreed to sign a five-year contract with the option to extend the deal by a further 12 months.

Mazraoui, who is likely to replace West Ham United-bound Aaron Wan-Bissaka, will cost United €15m plus €5m in bonuses. Having now reached agreements with Bayern for both players, United are now working to wrap up their signings swiftly.

Amid an injury crisis at the back, Erik ten Hag was forced to rely on 36-year-old Jonny Evans against City. Lisandro Martinez, meanwhile, was shifted to the left flank in the absence of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

United are scheduled to face Fulham on Friday. As such, they do not have much time left to register both players to ensure they are available for selection for the Premier League opener.

In that regard, Bayern’s sporting director has suggested United fans will not have to wait too long to see both players in red shirts.

According to German journalist Florian Plettenberg, Eberl “expects” the transfer of the Bayern duo to Old Trafford to be “finalised soon”.

When asked if there would be an announcement shortly, Eberly stated: “It looks like it!”

Meanwhile, Plettenberg reports that flight to Manchester and medicals have been booked for Monday.

In De Ligt and Mazraoui, who both enjoyed plenty of success at Ajax under Ten Hag, the United gaffer is getting technically proficient players who are well aware of his philosophy and style of play and are truly capable of pushing the backline higher up the field.
