Bayern Munich defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui have been left ‘bemused’ after the club rejected a double bid from Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag’s team submitted a formal proposal to sign the defensive duo on Thursday but saw their offer turned down by the Bundesliga side.

The Athletic are reporting that Bayern’s rejection of the offer has ‘bemused’ De Ligt and Mazraoui, based on their understanding of the German club’s demands.

The players – who are both represented by the same agent, Rafaela Pimenta – are keen to move to the Premier League and have agreed personal terms on five-year contracts at Old Trafford.

Negotiations are ongoing between the two clubs as United look to continue an encouraging summer of transfer business with the double deal. De Ligt’s arrival would be a major boost, following the news that summer signing Leny Yoro will miss the start of the season with a foot injury.

Mazraoui’s ability to operate in either full-back position would also be welcomed at Manchester United, who endured multiple injury problems last season.

United are expected to sanction the sale of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who is in talks with West Ham, to free room in the squad for Mazraoui’s arrival.
