Sky Germany reports Bayer Leverkusen are in contract talks with Florian Wirtz over an extension to his current deal which expires in 2027.

Leverkusen were asked about Wirtz’s contract situation amid reports over an extension having already been agreed:

“Bayer 04 have had a very trusting and close relationship with Florian Wirtz and his family for years. Contractual matters are discussed exclusively between the Bayer 04 management and the Wirtz family. If anything changes in the current contractual situation, Bayer 04 will of course communicate that in agreement with the Wirtz family. We ask for your understanding that we will not comment further on this topic.“

Yesterday it was reported that it was looking increasingly likely that Wirtz would extend his stay at the BayArena beyond this summer, while on top of this, Bayern Munich do not have the financial funds to afford the €150m fee and €20m salary that Leverkusen would likely demand for.

kicker then reported today that Wirtz had already extended his contract at Leverkusen until 2028, however the above statement confirmed this may not be the case.

What is clear is that any extension for Wirtz will only be a one-year extension and it will also mean that Wirtz will likely leave the BayArena in 2026. What was also said yesterday is that Wirtz’s future is not linked to that of Xabi Alonso, so if the former Spanish midfielder leaves the club in the summer then the Pulheim native will be a key figure in the next head coach’s plans.
