Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

April 4 (The Sports Xchange) - Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig was scratched from the Dodgers' starting lineup for Friday's home opener because he was late for batting practice. A team spokesman told ESPNLosAnelges.com that Puig was not aware that the team was hitting on the field prior to the game. Before day games, the Dodgers often take batting practice in the indoor batting cage. When Puig came onto the field from Dodgers' clubhouse, the team was about halfway through its batting practice. Puig's removal from the lineup allowed manager Don Mattingly to put Matt Kemp in the starting lineup in center field. Kemp, who had ankle surgery in October, had been activated from the disabled list Friday. - - - The Cleveland Indians signed second baseman Jason Kipnis to a six-year contract extension that runs thru the 2019 season and includes a club option for 2020. The club did not disclose financial details of the deal but CBSSports.com reported the contract is worth $52.5 million. Kipnis gets a $1 million signing bonus plus a $2 million salary this year. The amount increases each year with $4 million in 2015, $6 million in 2016, $9 million in 2017, $13.5 million in 2018 and $14.5 million in 2019. - - - Chicago White Sox reliever Nate Jones, who has yet to get a batter out this season, was placed on the disabled list on Friday with a strained hip. Jones suffered the injury early in spring training, but began the season on the active roster. He aggravated the injury on Thursday. (Editing by Gene Cherry)
