Baseball-Highlights of Saturday's Major League games

(Adds late games) April 18 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Saturday's Major League Baseball games: - - - Mets 5, Marlins 4 Right-hander Jacob deGrom threw seven shutout innings to run his scoreless streak to 18 1/3 innings and catcher Travis d'Arnaud and shortstop Wilmer Flores each homered as the red-hot New York Mets hung on to beat the Miami at Citi Field. The Mets (9-3) have won seven straight, their longest winning streak since June 10-18, 2010. A pre-game players-only meeting didn't help the Marlins (3-9), who have lost six of eight. DeGrom, the reigning National League Rookie of the Year, allowed five hits, all singles, and walked none while striking out eight. He allowed just three Marlins to get as far as second base and only one to reach third. - - - Mariners 3, Rangers 1 Felix Hernandez delivered when the Seattle Mariners needed him on Saturday night. The Mariners ace allowed two hits in seven innings and had 12 strikeouts to help snap Seattle's four-game losing streak by way of a 3-1 win over the Texas Rangers at Safeco Field. - - - Yankees 9, Rays 0 Masahiro Tanaka threw seven innings of two-hit baseball and Chris Young's grand slam highlighted a seven-run seventh as the New York Yankees thumped Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field. The Yankees (5-6) tagged three Rays pitchers for seven runs on five hits in the seventh, including Young's two-out grand slam off reliever Grant Balfour. - - - White Sox 12, Tigers 3 Adam LaRoche hit a three-run homer in the third inning and Jose Abreu belted a grand slam one inning later, while Chris Sale allowed four hits over six innings to lead the Chicago White Sox to a victory over Detroit. The left-handed Sale (2-0) walked one, struck out six and benefited from Chicago's biggest offensive outburst of the season, also the most runs Detroit has been tagged for in a game this year. - - - Giants 4, Diamondbacks 1 Rookie right-hander Chris Heston pitched his third straight gem, shortstop Brandon Crawford hit a two-run homer, and San Francisco ended their eight-game losing streak with a victory against Arizona at AT&T Park. The Giants received their 2014 World Series championship rings during a ceremony before the game. - - - Athletics 5, Royals 0 Josh Reddick hit a three-run homer, right-hander Jesse Hahn pitched superbly into the sixth before leaving with a finger blister as Oakland shut out Kansas City. The A's have outscored their opponents 47-1 in their six victories. It was the A's major league best fifth shutout. - - - Cardinals 5, Reds 2 Right-hander Carlos Martinez threw six solid innings and Matt Carpenter continued his mastery of Cincinnati starter Homer Bailey with two hits and two RBIs in St. Louis' win at sold-out Busch Stadium. Martinez (1-0) allowed just three hits, one of them a leadoff homer by Zack Cozart in the top of the fifth. Martinez walked two and struck out four. - - - Dodgers 6, Rockies 3 First baseman Adrian Gonzalez drove in three runs and extended his hitting streak to 13 games, sparking the Los Angeles Dodgers to a victory over Colorado before 45,912 fans at Dodger Stadium. Pitcher Zack Greinke also helped the Dodgers (8-3) capture their sixth win in a row and defeat the Rockies at Dodgers Stadium for the eighth straight time. - - - Phillies 5, Nationals 3 Pinch-hitter Grady Sizemore reached on a fielder's choice to drive in pinch-runner Ben Revere with a grounder to first for the tie-breaking run in the seventh as Philadelphia beat Washington. Ryan Howard led off the inning with a walk and was replaced by Revere, who stole second and took third on a flyout to right. Revere then scampered home to beat a throw from first baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the ball hit by Sizemore to make it 4-3. The Phillies added an insurance run in the ninth on a two-out single by Odubel Herrera. - - - Blue Jays 6, Braves 5 (10 innings) Josh Donaldson hit his third home run in two days with a leadoff blast in the 10th inning that lifted Toronto over Atlanta. After Jose Bautista's two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth gave the Blue Jays a 5-4 lead, the Braves tied things in the ninth on Kelly Johnson' homer. Donaldson greeted Braves reliever Sugar Ray Marimon (0-1) with a drive into the left field stands to give Brett Cecil (1-1) the victory for Toronto. - - - Astros 4, Angels 0 Houston's Dallas Keuchel struck out seven over six innings and combined with three relievers on a three-hitter in the Astros' shutout win over the Los Angeles Angels at Houston's Minute Maid Park. Right fielder George Springer provided all of the offence Keuchel needed as the left-hander earned his second win of the season. Springer took Angels left-hander C.J. Wilson deep in the sixth inning for his first home run of the young season. - - - Indians 4, Twins 2 Cleveland got six strong innings from right-hander Danny Salazar in a win over Minnesota. Cubs left-hander Zac Rosscup (1-0) worked two innings for the victory. Heralded Cubs prospect Kris Bryant notched his first Major League hit and reached base five times. Chris Tillman rebounded from a slow start to strike out five in the win. Tillman (2-1) gave up six hits and one earned run before leaving in the sixth. Manny Machado and Caleb Joseph added RBIs for the Orioles (6-5). - - - Pirates 6, Brewers 2 Jeff Locke pitched eight innings of one-run baseball and Starling Marte homered and drove in a career-high five RBIs to lead Pittsburgh past Milwaukee. Pittsburgh's left-hander scattered four hits over eight frames and gave up just one run, on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Locke (2-0) walked none and struck out six and his eight innings tied a career high. (Editing By Cameron French)
