Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, at the age of 38, is showing no signs of slowing down and reports from SPORT indicate that the Bayern Munich star has no intention of retiring anytime soon, which spells trouble for Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

This situation is unusual, especially for someone like Ter Stegen, who is considered one of the best goalkeepers globally and is the starting keeper for Barcelona.

Despite his impressive credentials, however, he has found himself on the bench when it comes to playing for the German national team.

The key reason behind Ter Stegen’s predicament is Neuer. Even at 38, Neuer continues to perform at an elite level, making him the undisputed number-one choice for Germany’s national team.

As a result, ter Stegen hasn’t played a single minute in major tournaments like the Euro or the World Cup over the last decade.

Following Germany’s recent exit from the Euros, there was some speculation that Neuer might retire from international football. This would have given Ter Stegen a clear path to becoming the first-choice goalkeeper for Germany at the 2026 World Cup.

However, according to German media, the German Football Association believes that Neuer plans to continue his international career as he has not indicated any plans to step down, which means he is likely to remain Germany’s top goalkeeper despite his age.

This leaves Ter Stegen in a frustrating position, as he may have to keep waiting for his chance to shine on the international stage.

For now, there are still two years until the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and a lot can change in that time.

If Ter Stegen continues his excellent form with Barcelona and Neuer, who will be 40 in 2026, faces any setbacks, the Barcelona keeper might finally get the opportunity to represent Germany at a World Cup.
