The renewal spree at FC Barcelona is set to continue this week. Following the contract extensions of Ronald Araujo and Gerard Martin last week, the Blaugrana are set to tie down midfield duo Pedri and Gavi to new deals in the next few days.

Now, it appears that one more important player in Hansi Flick’s setup will be penning a new contract extension with the Blaugrana.

Inigo Martinez to sign a new deal this week

According to Jijantes FC, Inigo Martinez will also extend his contract with Barcelona this week. If there are no changes to the plans, the defender will renew alongside Pedri and Gavi in the coming days.

The veteran centre-back’s current deal expires in 2025 but has a clause in his contract that automatically triggers a one-year extension if he plays at least 45 minutes in 60% of the matches.

While he is very much on track to activate that, the club’s sporting management has decided not to wait for that threshold to be reached before finalising his renewal, given his excellent attitude and performance.

As such, Martinez is expected to sign an extension with Barcelona soon. The new agreement will extend his contract until 30 June 2026.

The veteran Spaniard has played 27 matches this season, scoring two goals. At this point, the defender has already played two more games than he did throughout the entire previous season, which reflects the strong trust manager Hansi Flick has in him.

Although an injury during the Spanish Super Cup final has sidelined him, Barcelona have complete faith in his abilities and believe his renewal is fully deserved.

Martinez’s commitment and level of play have been key factors in expediting this decision, along with his involvement with the younger players in the squad.

It must be remembered that there were many doubts and rumours about Martinez’s potential departure at the beginning of the season.

However, his consistent work ethic and leadership qualities have gradually dispelled those doubts, solidifying him as undoubtedly one of the pillars of the Barcelona defence under Flick.
