Barcelona’s undefeated start: Stats show they are Europe’s top team
FC Barcelona are off to their best start in La Liga since the 2018-19 season, winning all 12 points available so far.
This puts them at the top of the table, sharing the best record in the major leagues with Manchester City, Liverpool, and Paris Saint-Germain, all of whom have also won their first three matches.
In Italy, Inter, Juventus, Torino, and Udinese are leading with seven points from nine, while in Germany, Heidenheim, Leipzig, and Bayern Munich have won their first two games, earning six points each.
A perfect headstart
Barcelona’s impressive start includes a four-point lead over their closest rivals, Real Madrid, Atletico de Madrid, and Villarreal.
This lead is the largest among the top five leagues in Europe as the season breaks for international fixtures.
Under Hansi Flick, Barcelona have conceded only three goals while scoring 13, a tally only matched by Luis Enrique’s PSG. Their recent performances include a 7-0 victory against Real Valladolid, a 2-1 win over Athletic, and a 2-1 win against Rayo Vallecano, with both away games featuring comebacks.
The last time Barcelona had such an attacking balance was during the 2018-19 season under Ernesto Valverde, with star players like Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez leading the attack.
During that season, Barcelona’s perfect run was interrupted by a 2-2 draw with Girona on the fifth matchday.
Interestingly, Barcelona’s next fixture will be against Girona on 15 September and the team will be aiming to extend their winning streak and match their record of eight consecutive victories from the 2013-14 season.
Their upcoming matches include an away game at Villarreal on 22 September, followed by a Champions League opener against Monaco on 19 September.
Barcelona will also face Getafe on 25 September and travel to play Osasuna on 28 September, before taking on Young Boys at the Estadi Olímpic on 1 October.
