Marc-Andre ter Stegen has picked up a nasty knock during Barcelona’s contest against Villarreal. He was immediately subbed off, with Inaki Pena replacing him in goal.

The German picked up a blow at the cusp of half-time when a deep corner from the flank saw him backpedal and fall awkwardly as he gathered the ball in the air.

The goalkeeper was seen writhing in agony as he fell flat on the ground. He couldn’t hold back his tears either.

Ter Stegen’s injury came just minutes after his excellent save to deny Pepe in a one-on-one situation.

It is ter Stegen’s right knee again

Perhaps the most concerning part of ter Stegen’s injury is that the knock took place in his right knee, which has been a pain point for the German for quite some time now.

Back in 2021, ter Stegen had to undergo surgery to treat an injury to the patellar tendon in his right knee. A blow on the right knee once again, therefore, could spell trouble for the former Gladbach shot-stopper.

More details are likely to come out tomorrow, as the Barcelona medical team closely assess his situation. But early signs do not point to a positive outcome.
