A leading member of the attacking ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona played a direct role in the club’s pursuit of goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny.

That’s according to journalist Patrick Berger of Sky Germany, who points towards Robert Lewandowski as the player in question.

The name of shot-stopper Szczęsny has of course dominated the headlines in Catalunya’s capital over the last 24 hours.

This comes after widespread confirmation was forthcoming that the Pole is all set to come out of retirement, to pen terms with Barcelona for the season ahead.

As much comes after Blaugrana no.1 Marc-André ter Stegen was ruled out for what is expected to be the remainder of the campaign through a serious knee injury.

Szczęsny, it is understood, required some convincing to commit to a Camp Nou switch, having only recently hung up his gloves to spend more time with his family.

And one player who played a leading role in as much comes in the form of the aforementioned Robert Lewandowski.

As per a report from Patrick Berger of Sky:

‘Fellow countryman Robert Lewandowski contacted Szczesny after ter Stegen’s absence and internally pushed for the transfer.’
