Barcelona aim to have the centre-forward position for the next season sorted as soon as possible.

A debate regarding Robert Lewandowski’s future has been raised within the club after his recent dip in form.

As such, discussions about whether to stick with the 36-year-old for one more season or splurge on a replacement in the summer are taking place.

Serious talks with Lewandowski in February

As such, SPORT reports that after the winter transfer window, Barcelona and Lewandowski will hold discussions to confirm the continuation of a key player for coach Hansi Flick.

Lewandowski signed a three-year contract with the Catalans, with an option for a fourth based on the number of matches played this term.

The Blaugrana are confident that this clause will be activated by February, a point at which Lewandowski, provided there are no physical setbacks, will have played 60% of the matches.

Thereon, the player’s performance will influence the decision, which has sparked an ongoing internal debate.

A section of the club’s board believes that this summer may be the right time to sign a top-level forward for both the present and future. Barcelona are also confident that the funds from VIP seat sales at the new Camp Nou will help finance a move.

It could be an ideal summer, as both Erling Haaland and Viktor Gyokeres, two coveted strikers, may become available on the market.

Deco, Flick in favour of sticking with Lewandowski

Barcelona enjoy a strong relationship with Lewandowski’s agent, Pini Zahavi, and talks on this matter will begin in February.

Deco and Flick are clear that Lewandowski’s performance is optimal and that an option could be to extend his contract for another year and wait until 2026 to find a suitable replacement.

Although Lewandowski will turn 37 next summer, he is in good physical condition, and his numbers remain strong. However, if his performance dips, as it has in recent weeks, the debate will reopen.

Lewandowski’s intentions are clear – he wants to stay at Barça and believes he will earn it on the pitch. He sees himself competing at the highest level for at least another year and is very comfortable at the club.

However, Barcelona also know that he is a professional who would not resist a decision if there are doubts about his future.

For the time being, Barcelona hope to see out January, confident that the superstar will return to his usual goalscoring form.
