UEFA has taken action to punish Barcelona after a racist banner was spotted amongst the Barcelona fans who had travelled to Monaco for the club’s away match in the Champions League.

The banner read ‘Flick Heil’, and was spotted amongst spectators during Barcelona’s opening Champions League match which took place on Thursday 19th September.

The punishment dished out by UEFA entails a €10,000 fine and a ban on away supporters during the club’s next away fixture in the Champions League, which comes against Red Star Belgrade on 6th November.

In a statement on the club’s website, Barcelona assured that they ‘reject any justification for violence’ and assured that the club will comply with the punishment they have received.

The club also assures that they will strengthen initiatives that they take to prevent further occurrences of this nature and to sanction the individuals responsible.

Everyone at the club will be working hard to ensure that this type of situation is a one-off and that no harsher punishments come their way in the future.
