Barcelona Ready to Make Bold Move to Ward Off PSG, Rivals for €250M-Rated Star
This summer, there were rumors that Paris Saint-Germain had their eye on Lamine Yamal as a possible successor to Kylian Mbappé. However, FC Barcelona are looking to ensure that the teenager signs an extension and has a salary that keeps him happy and other clubs away.
Mundo Deportivo reported over the summer that PSG was prepared to break its own transfer record, offering up to €250 million—surpassing the €222 million it had previously spent—to sign Yamal.
However, despite the interest, no serious negotiations took place. For now, PSG will have to admire Yamal from a distance. While PSG and other clubs might make another attempt to sign Yamal in the future, Barcelona is determined to keep its young talent.
According to Marca (h/t Le10Sport), the Spanish club is preparing a massive new contract for him. Yamal turns 18 on July 13, 2025, and once he’s of legal age, he could sign an extension with Barça through 2030, along with a significant pay raise.
PSG sporting advisor Luis Campos attended the Thinking Football Summit in Portugal this week, where he was asked about Yamal.
“If all the players who have appeared in the press linked to PSG were here, we would have five stars in each position,” Campos said. “Of course, I like Lamine Yamal, but also [Ousmane] Dembelé, Kang-in Lee, [Marco] Asensio… Fantastic players of enormous quality.
“To say that Yamal is not a great player would be a huge mistake on my part, he is an excellent footballer and I am very happy to see him playing at his level. But PSG are very happy with the players they have in these positions.”
