Barcelona’s pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz appears to be losing steam, as reports from Sport Bild suggest that the Blaugrana are now out of the running for the talented German.

The primary obstacle for Barcelona is financial, with the club struggling to manage the hefty €150 million price tag Bayer Leverkusen has placed on Wirtz. Given the club’s current financial state, such a figure is hardly feasible.

Barcelona’s interest in Wirtz has been well-known, but with competition from top clubs like Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, and Arsenal, the financial demands may be too much for Barça to handle.

Each of these teams boasts far stronger financial stability, making them better positioned to meet Leverkusen’s demands and secure Wirtz’s services.

Wirtz will leave Bayer, but not for Barcelona

As it stands, Wirtz is expected to stay with Bayer Leverkusen until the summer of 2025. While the Bundesliga side is keen to hold on to their star player, they are also preparing for the likelihood of his departure.

Leverkusen have begun looking for a potential replacement, fully aware that Wirtz’s exit is a strong possibility. The club remains firm on its valuation, demanding a minimum transfer fee of €150 million.

Wirtz has made it clear that his ambitions go beyond just moving to a top club—he wants to compete in the Champions League.

Bayer won’t budge

Any club that secures his signature will not only have to meet Bayer Leverkusen’s financial expectations but also provide a competitive environment that aligns with Wirtz’s desire to reach the pinnacle of European football.

With so many elite clubs involved in the race for his signature, the transfer fee is expected to soar beyond the €100 million mark.

Unfortunately for Barcelona, this is a sum they simply cannot afford. While they have long been interested in Wirtz, the financial reality of the situation makes it increasingly unlikely that the Blaugrana will remain contenders in this race.
