Barcelona prioritise the renewals of two key stars this month before new signings
Following the return to the 1:1 ‘fair play’ regulation, and after ensuring Ronald Araújo’s continued presence by addressing his new contract as a Barcelona player, the club sporting director Deco has shifted its focus to other important matters.
The topic of bringing in a new player before the January transfer window closes remains on the agenda, with Marcus Rashford being a key target.
However, according to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are eager to address the contract renewal of two key players – Pedri and Gavi – as a priority before thinking of entering the market.
Pedri and Gavi’s current contracts run until 2026, and Barça have been in negotiations over a renewal for some time. The club considers both midfielders to be cornerstone players for the future and wish to hand them improved contracts.
Barcelona’s aim is to finalise these renewals within January. This is the club’s top priority, even before exploring potential transfers during the winter market.
Pedri’s situation
The renewal of Pedri is considered 95% complete. The new deal would extend for five years, until 2030.
The 22-year-old’s representative, Hector Peris, met with Deco in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, during the Spanish Super Cup to advance negotiations.
A final meeting is expected to iron out the remaining details and exchange documents before signing the agreement that will keep Pedri, back to his best this season, at the club for a long time.
What about Gavi?
Gavi’s renewal is also progressing well. The club’s intention is to offer him a new contract equivalent to Pedri’s, as both players are seen as equally vital to Barcelona’s future.
While the 20-year-old’s representatives have maintained discretion and refrained from commenting on negotiations, the club remain optimistic due to the player and his agent’s commitment to staying.
Negotiations for Gavi’s extension began during his injury recovery. Both Deco and the club’s sporting leadership have unwavering confidence in the La Masia graduate and view him as a pivotal figure in the team’s long-term plans.
As such, Barcelona are working to finalise these agreements in January, even before entering the transfer market.
