Barcelona president pushing for a Clasico at Johan Cruyff Stadium
The upcoming Clasico on May 11 remains shrouded in uncertainty as doubts persist about the readiness of the Spotify Camp Nou.
With the extension for playing at Montjuic potentially challenging beyond April 23, when the agreement with the Ajuntament de Barcelona expires, the final venue for this crucial La Liga match is still up in the air.
Barcelona board favours Johan Cruyff Stadium
Originally, there was talk of Barcelona hosting the Clasico in a large European stadium outside Spain to capitalize on the match’s global appeal.
However, following the latest board meeting, FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has made his stance clear: if the Spotify Camp Nou isn’t ready, he wants the match to be played at the Johan Cruyff Stadium, reports Diario SPORT.
Laporta is firm in his belief that with the league title potentially on the line, it’s vital for the game to be played on home ground, emphasizing the significant role the fans would play.
That said, it must be noted that the Johan Cruyff Stadium’s capacity could be a major bottleneck, as it can only accommodate 6,000 supporters.
But it appears Barça are prepared to trade the economic perks of hosting the game in a big stadium in order to gain some valuable home support.
If this plan also falls through, Montilivi in Girona was considered as a backup, though this option is complicated by Girona’s home game against Villarreal on the same matchday.
However, optimism was expressed during the meeting that Limak, the construction company, will meet their deadlines, ensuring that Camp Nou’s first phase of renovation is complete by late April.
This would allow the stadium to host not only the Clasico but also the upcoming match against Villarreal.
