Barcelona players react angrily after Lamine Yamal suffers two rough tackles against Villarreal
FC Barcelona put on another show in La Liga last night as they beat Villarreal 5-1 with goals from Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Pablo Torre. With this win, the Catalans have won all their matches in La Liga 2024-25, and have scored 16 goals in the last three league games.
One of the negatives from this win was the severe injury suffered by Marc Andre Ter Stegen, for which he is set to undergo surgery today. However, things could have gone even worse, as another of their key players received two harsh blows in the final phase of the game.
As MARCA has reported, Lamine Yamal received two very hard tackles from two Villarreal players when the match was already done and dusted. The first of these blows came from Sergi Cardona, who gave Yamal a knee-height kick, even though he was nowhere near the ball. He received a booking for this action and was also reprimanded by Raphinha and other Barcelona players for the recklessness displayed.
Only a few seconds later, the former Barcelona academy graduate Ilias Akhomach once again tackled Yamal to bring him down. He was also shown a yellow card by the referee, and the Barcelona players reacted furiously fearing long-term damage to the young forward.
Gladly, the 17-year-old winger was able to get out of these two challenges without much damage and is expected to remain available for the upcoming match against Getafe CF on Wednesday.
On the other hand, his teammate Marc Andre Ter Stegen will remain on the sidelines for the next seven to eight months, and might not play again this season as he suffered a torn patellar tendon of the right leg. FC Barcelona will now have to decide whether to trust Inaki Pena or bring in another goalkeeper to replace him in the squad.
