Some Barcelona players prefer to see Inaki Pena start in goal over Szczesny – report
After recent debate and questions over the goalkeeping position at FC Barcelona, manager Hansi Flick seemingly made a definitive decision on who his No. 1 will be last night when naming the starting XI vs Valencia.
The German tactician opted for Wojciech Szczesny ahead of Inaki Pena, making it clear as to who his preferred choice in goal would be, despite Barça’s goalkeeping coach being inclined towards the homegrown talent being the starter.
Some players prefer Pena
Now, journalist Laia Tudel (h/t Actualite Barça) has come forward with an update on the situation, claiming that there are some players in the Barcelona locker room who would also prefer Inaki Pena as the starting goalkeeper.
Pena had done a solid job in goal since Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s injury and seemed to have the starting spot locked in.
The La Masia star’s tardiness cost him though as his lateness to arrive for a training session cost him a spot in the starting XI against Athletic Club in the Spanish Super Cup, from which point, Szczesny has gained ground on him.
Even though the Pole made two costly errors against Benfica last week, Flick opted to stick with him against Valencia, where he made another rash decision.
Pena, for his part, is said to be going through a difficult time dealing with his sudden ouster from the team with Flick having not provided him with any explanation for the same.
The 25-year-old, however, appears to have the support of his teammates and will hope to earn his place back in the coming weeks by making the most of whatever chances he gets.
