Wojciech Szczesny will come out of retirement after hearing of the newly created vacancy in Barcelona. The Polish star has quickly become the favourite to arrive at the club and has reportedly begun physical preparations as well.

As revealed yesterday, the shot-stopper’s medical examinations are scheduled for Monday in Catalonia with the contract signing also planned in its vicinity.

However, reports from Mundo Deportivo now reveal that in case the agreement with the Pole fails, they will not look for alternatives. Rather, they would stick with Inaki Pena until January.

The Plan B

For now, if Barcelona go for an immediate reinforcement, Szczesny is the only name that interests them.

However, the player demands a starting role and the management is contemplating if it is right to offer him that just when they are beginning to show confidence in Inaki Pena.

If an agreement with the Pole is not reached, the outlet reveals that they will not turn to any other player as a short-term replacement but wait until January before taking a decision.

With a better financial fair play situation in the winter market, they will then look towards more options with a long-term plan in mind.

Should Joan Laporta and Co. opt against making an immediate signing, Pena will thus continue as the team’s default starting option.

The youngster, after all, kept a clean sheet on his full debut against Getafe and did not concede any goals after coming on against Villarreal when Marc-Andre Ter Stegen was injured.

The only dilemma left to solve, however, is whether or not the club should maintain faith in the homegrown star or if they should promise Szczesny the starting role that he expects.
