Barcelona will not play a match on the day of their 125th anniversary
Barcelona have made it clear that there will be no football match scheduled for their 125th anniversary, according to a report from Mundo Deportivo.
The club specifically requested that Friday, 29th November, which marks their founding date, be left free from games. As a result, the league match against Las Palmas, initially set for that day, will be moved to the weekend.
This means the game will now take place either on Saturday or Sunday, providing the team with more flexibility.
Additionally, the Euroleague basketball clash between Barcelona and Real Madrid, commonly referred to as “El Clasico,” has been rescheduled. Originally planned for the anniversary day itself, it will now take place a day earlier on Thursday, 28th November.
The club made this request to ensure that the basketball game does not overshadow the special celebrations planned for their milestone year.
Barcelona want to make the anniversary special
Despite the match against Las Palmas initially being possible on the anniversary, considering there are three days between Barcelona’s Champions League fixture against Brest (on 26th November) and the original league match date, the club chose to avoid any conflict with their anniversary celebrations.
Instead, the club intends to focus entirely on marking this special day. The highlight of the celebrations will be a significant event at the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
During this ceremony, the official 125th-anniversary song will be revealed. This song is based on the lyrics of three finalists, which were selected from 532 entries by a special jury.
The three finalists include Carles Cases, Nuria Graham, and Albert Guinovart, all of whom are currently working on turning their lyrics into music.
The chosen lyrics were written by talented individuals such as journalist David Bricolle Ibanez, artist Marc Ricos Casajuana, and poet Xavier Gonzalez-Costa.
In addition to this, there are several other events taking place around the same time. On Saturday, 30th November, two concerts are scheduled at Palau Sant Jordi, featuring Manolo Garcia and Pignoise.
As a result, Barcelona’s city council has warned of the potential difficulty in hosting a football match that evening. Lastly, the Jean Bouin race will also take place on Sunday, 1st December.
