Barcelona’s board are not convinced about the signing of Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao despite the winger’s impressive performances at Euro 2024.

Williams has been one of the stars of the tournament in an impressive Spain team and scored as La Roja booked their place in the quarter-finals with a 4-1 win over Georgia on Sunday.

The 21-year-old has been heavily-linked with a summer transfer to Barcelona, having shone alongside Lamine Yamal for the national team. However, Spanish outlet Sport are reporting that not all at Barcelona are in favour of signing Williams.

The winger turned down a potential free transfer move to the Camp Nou to sign a new deal at Athletic Bilbao last season and some at Barcelona remain unhappy with that decision, given the fee now involved to sign Williams and the ongoing economic issues at the club.

Williams’ new contract protected his value for Bilbao, who inserted a release clause in his extension now understood to be worth around €58m (£49m). Chelsea had been linked put have been put off by the finances involved, while Liverpool and Arsenal are each monitoring his performances at Euro 2024.

Barcelona want to sign a left-sided forward in the summer transfer window and the club’s options also include Liverpool’s Luis Diaz and RB Leipzig midfielder Dani Olmo, with the latter having a release clause of €60m.
