Barcelona learn Dani Olmo fate as LaLiga issue final decision on player registration

Barcelona have tried every trick in the book to get Dani Olmo registered as one of their players, but LaLiga have knocked them back in what could be the final blow.

The Catalan outfit signed the attacking midfielder for €55 million from RB Leipzig last summer, but were unable to initially register him due to the squad cost limit imposed on them by the league.

A long-term injury to Andreas Christensen provided room to do so temporarily, though that registration expired on 31 December and the club have been desperately scrambling to have ratified as member of Hansi Flick’s squad.

Barcelona appealed to the Spanish courts in a bid to confirm Olmo’s registration, but that was rejected. They also sought to sell VIP seats at the future Spotify Nou Camp at a discounted price of around €110m to increasing their spending limit.

In a statement released on Saturday, LaLiga and the Spanish football federation, the RFEF, confirmed that Barça’s squad cost limit had been increased – but did not grant the club the ability to register either Olmo or forward Pau Victor.

LaLiga statement in full as Barcelona blocked from registering Dani Olmo

“The Monitoring Committee of the LALIGA-RFEF Coordination Agreement has met to address the request for a prior visa and processing of the federation licenses of the players Mr. Daniel Olmo Carvajal and Mr. Pau Víctor Delgado, issued by FC Barcelona.

“Following compliance by FCB with the requirements regarding LALIGA’s financial control on 3 January 2025 and the Club completing the relevant documentation, LALIGA’s Budget Validation Body has decided to extend the FCB Sports Squad Cost Limit from the aforementioned date.

“In this regard, having been requested the licenses for the referred players by FC Barcelona, after analysis of the applicable federation regulations, the Monitoring Committee agrees not to grant the prior visa, nor the definitive license requested by FC Barcelona for the players Mr. Daniel Olmo Carvajal and Mr. Pau Víctor Delgado in accordance with the literal interpretation of articles 130.2 and 141.5 of the General Regulations of the RFEF that prevent a player whose license is cancelled, from being able to obtain a license in the same club team to which he was already linked, during the course of the same season.”
