The Barcelona duo that has not lost a game while playing together
In the upcoming Catalan derby against Espanyol, Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez are set to be Barcelona’s starting centre-back pairing, barring any last-minute changes.
This duo, comprising the talented youth player and the experienced defender, has established a remarkable record when they play together. The record? They have never faced defeat in their league appearances, whether as starters or substitutes.
Over the last two seasons, Cubarsi and Martinez have participated in 22 LaLiga matches together. Their statistics are impressive, boasting 20 victories and just two draws, which both occurred during the previous season.
A brief look
Notably, when they were not on the field as a pairing, such as in the match against Osasuna, the team faced a loss, with Sergi Dominguez partnering with Cubarsi instead.
They also played together during this year’s Champions League encounter against Monaco, which resulted in Eric Garcia receiving a red card. The match ended 2-1 in Monaco’s favour.
Ahead of the derby on Sunday, manager Hansi Flick took the opportunity in a press conference to highlight his confidence in the partnership between Cubarsi and Martinez.
Flick expressed his satisfaction with how reliable they have been in the central defence, indicating that their collaboration has significantly contributed to the team’s stability.
This season, Barcelona have been excellent, only losing against Osasuna in the league. In fact, that is the only instance the team has dropped points in La Liga. As a result of this form, the team has gone one to score 37 goals while conceding 19.
The biggest difference observed within Flick’s Barcelona side is discipline, which was made evident against Real Madrid where Inigo and Martinez trapped the Madrid forwards offside on 12 occasions.
