Frenkie de Jong continues to remain a player that divides opinion within FC Barcelona. Signed in 2019 from Ajax in a big-money deal, the Dutchman has established himself as a permanent fixture in the team.

However, there is a sense of feeling that the 26-year-old has not been able to live up to the expectations and fulfil his potential.

That, coupled with his hefty contract, has led to rumours of a sale summer after summer in recent years and the situation is no different this year either.

Barcelona will consider De Jong’s sale in 2025

It has been suggested that Barcelona could consider selling De Jong this summer itself, but it appears that manager Hansi Flick remains keen on retaining the Netherlands international.

However, according to ARA, the Blaugrana might end up putting the midfielder on the market next year if their efforts to renew his contract do not yield the desired result.

De Jong is one of the highest-paid players at Barça currently and is bound to earn €23 million gross for the 2024/25 season.

Such a contract is detrimental to Barcelona who are eager to reduce their wage bill and have already tabled a renewal offer with more affordable terms a few months ago.

However, there has been no response from the 26-year-old midfielder yet and if the situation persists and an agreement is not finalised, Barça intend to sell him next year in 2025.

After all, De Jong’s contract expires in 2026 meaning the Catalans could run the risk of losing him for free if they do not sell him next year.

There is no shortage of interest in De Jong, with plenty of clubs keeping an eye on his situation. Currently injured, the midfielder’s return in time for the start of the new season is in doubt.

While he might remain at Barcelona for one more season, the 26-year-old could end up on the market next year.
