FC Barcelona were unable to win any trophy in the last season, which was a significant disappointment for the club’s administration and fans.

Several reasons have been identified to have caused this failure, and one argument put forward by several commentators is that the team was not adequately physically trained for such a strenuous season.

As a result, changes in the physical staff might be needed before the upcoming season, and according to Diario AS, the Catalans are looking to immediately bring their former physical trainer, Antonio Gomez, back to their club.

Gomez is currently working with the Spanish national team that is competing in the UEFA EURO 2024 and has a highly varied experience training football teams across Europe. Starting his career with Murcia, the trainer has worked at Lleida, Cartagena, Sunderland, Ipswich, Liverpool, Barcelona, and Flamengo.

In addition to these club sides, Gomez has also worked for two international sides. His appointment with the RFEF was his second international experience after he had already worked as a trainer for the Polish international team.

This latter experience can be key for his return to Barcelona, as Robert Lewandowski, with whom he worked closely in Poland, is one of the keenest advocates for his appointment.

The veteran striker has been one of the most outspoken critics of the physical preparation methods under Xavi and trusts Gomez to significantly improve the team in this regard.

Previously, the trainer has spent eight years at Barcelona, four working with the subsidiary and the other four working with the first team with Luis Enrique and Ernesto Valverde. He left Barça after Ronald Koeman’s arrival, and took up the job with Poland.

Now, as it would be difficult for him to work both for the national team and Barcelona, he will have to make a decision about which team he prefers after the conclusion of EURO 2024.
