The injury to Marc-Andre ter Stegen, which has effectively ruled him out for the remainder of the season, has left Barcelona scouring the market for replacements.

The Catalans are looking at free agents who they can recruit immediately as well as players at other clubs who can be signed in January and are expected to make a decision soon.

Names like Keylor Navas and Antonio Adan, currently unattached, are being considered while Alvaro Valles has emerged as a candidate for January.

Mio Backhaus on the agenda

Now, according to Lluis Carrasco on OnzeTV3, Werder Bremen’s second-choice goalkeeper Mio Backhaus could also be an option for Barcelona for January.

This is because the Blaugrana head coach Hansi Flick likes his compatriot and rates him highly.

Backhaus, 20, spent the last season on loan at FC Volendam in the Netherlands and was named the Best Goalkeeper in Eredivisie, despite the club getting relegated.

Backhaus had been linked with Barcelona during the summer transfer window as well and is now seemingly back on the agenda once again following Ter Stegen’s injury.

The German youth international has not played a single game so far for Werder Bremen this season and the promise of game-time at Barcelona could prove to be a tempting proposal.

It remains to be seen if the Catalan heavyweights do opt to go down this road or opt to sign someone with greater experience on a short-term deal knowing that Ter Stegen will be back next season.

Some big decisions await Flick, Deco, & co.
