Barcelona captain turns off comments on Instagram amid recent criticism
Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has found himself under intense scrutiny following a costly mistake in the Champions League clash against Monaco.
The goalkeeper’s poor pass to Eric Garcia led to the defender’s red card as he was forced to foul Takumi Minamino just a few metres outside the box – denying a clearing goalscoring opportunity in the process.
Reduced to 10 men, Barcelona’s defence looked in utter disarray, with Monaco breaking the deadlock just five minutes after Garcia’s red card. They went on to win the game 2-1.
The error has drawn significant criticism from the Barcelona faithful, with much of the blame directed at the German goalkeeper for his poor decision-making.
The backlash has spilt over onto social media, with fans voicing their displeasure in the comments section of Ter Stegen’s Instagram posts. Many even argued that he should be left out of the team.
Ter Stegen turns off Instagram comments
The goalkeeper recently shared an image of himself enjoying the America’s Cup in Barcelona’s port, but the wave of negative comments forced him to take action.
Ter Stegen has disabled the comments on his latest post, highlighting that he is not at all comfortable with the way Barcelona fans reacted to his latest mistake.
The situation marks another difficult chapter for Ter Stegen, who is one of the senior players in the team and must take responsibility for his errors.
Even after the Monaco game, ter Stegen did not assume full responsibility, arguing that the error was borne from a misunderstanding between him and Garcia.
Only time will tell how this situation evolves, especially as Barcelona gear up for yet another crucial encounter against Villarreal tomorrow.
