Barcelona captain’s new release clause set at €300 million, not €65 million – report
On Thursday, FC Barcelona announced that key defender and second captain Ronald Araujo has signed a new contract with the club until the summer of 2031.
The 25-year-old, who was close to leaving the Catalans for Juventus this month, performed a U-turn after talks with Deco and penned a new deal, albeit with a condition that he has a reasonable release clause in his contract.
The Blaugrana did not reveal the new release clause amount as part of their official announcement of Araujo’s renewal, creating an air of mystery around the situation.
Earlier today, though, reports emerged claiming that the figure of the Uruguayan international’s termination clause was set at a measly €65 million – going down from the previous amount of €1 billion – with the amount set to rise to €80 million in January 2026.
Araujo’s release clause set at €300 million
However, now, journalist Miguel Rico has come up with a fresh update disputing the figures reported earlier in the day.
The journalist states that Araujo’s release clause, following his latest contract renewal at Barcelona, is set at €300 million and not €65 million, according to official sources from the club.
While the Blaugrana would have preferred for the termination clause to stay at €1 billion, they agreed to lower the sum to €300 million so as to persuade the key defender to pen a new contract.
There will be some disputes and discrepancies regarding the release clause figure until the official numbers are confirmed by Barcelona themselves.
But a figure of €300 million seems more possible given how high Barça value Araujo and their intention to keep hold of the defender for a very long time.
