Barcelona’s 20-year-old prospect aims to follow in Fermin Lopez’s footsteps

Barcelona’s 20-year-old prospect aims to follow in Fermin Lopez’s footsteps

Despite the recent departure of Marc Guiu to Chelsea, Barcelona will have no shortage of talents looking to make a mark in professional football.

While Barça will certainly rue the exit of Guiu, the club have found themselves another potential gem in the form of Ruben Cantero.

A centre-back by trade, Cantero is coming on the back of an excellent loan spell at CD Calahorra and is poised to make a big impact in the coming season.

Cantero to play for Barça Atletic

As reported by Diario SPORT, Cantero is set to begin the pre-season as part of the Barça Atletic squad, managed by Rafa Marquez.

This comes on the back of his splendid loan campaign at Calahorra, as he appeared in 32 matches in the Spanish fourth tier.

Cantero impressed onlookers with his imposing presence at the back and many now expect him to replicate those performances at Barça Atletic next season.

Cantero looking to follow Fermin Lopez’s footsteps

The report adds that Cantero, for his part, feels confident of proving himself in Barcelona’s reserve squad next season.

In fact, the 20-year-old wants to follow in the footsteps of Fermin Lopez, who had notably come back from an excellent loan spell from Linares before proving himself in the first team.

Cantero is looking for a similar glide path, though his prospects lie more in the Barça Atletic squad rather than the first team.

The promotion of Pau Cubarsi, the departure of Pelayo and the potential sale of Mika Faye could put Cantero in a position to become a vital part of Barça Atletic’s defence next season.

Barcelona, for their part, have informed Cantero that they are counting on his services for the reserve team next season. The player will join the camp in the coming weeks, under the leadership of Rafa Marquez.
