Banner in Allen Fieldhouse recognizes Bill Self, KU’s all-time winningest coach

There’s a brand new banner hanging in the Allen Fieldhouse south rafters.

On Saturday, two minutes before the start of a nonconference men’s basketball clash between Kansas and Oakland, a banner honoring Bill Self for becoming the Jayhawks’ all-time winningest hoops coach, was unfurled just below the banners signaling the retired jerseys of Jayhawk greats Danny Manning and Jacque Vaughn.

The new banner reads: “Bill Self, Kansas basketball, all-time winningest coach.”

The banner was unfurled after a video — hosted by Kansas athletic director Travis Goff and chancellor Douglas Girod — was played signifying the latest addition to the fieldhouse.

The south rafters display jerseys of players honored with jersey retirement. The north rafters house six national-championship banners and the famous banner that reads: “Pay Heed All Who Enter: Beware of the Phog.” Also recognized on banners in the north rafters: KU’s All-Americans, Olympians, Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famers and Academic All-Americans.

Self, who is in his 22nd season as KU coach, on Tuesday in virtue of a win over Michigan State, claimed his 591st victory with the Jayhawks. That’s one more than Phog Allen’s 590 wins totaled in 39 seasons in Lawrence.

Self has a record of 591-143; Allen 590-219.

“You’ve touched so many lives, coach, so many families, and we feel the best is yet to come,” Goff said in the video.

Self thanked the fans, his players and assistant coaches, family and administration in the video played before the unfurling of the banner.

“We’ve done a little bit. Hopefully it’s just starting,” Self said.

He was not on the court for the unveiling, walking through the northwest tunnel at its conclusion to a standing ovation.
