‘He’s back’: Jamie Redknapp blown away by what 25yo Arsenal star did vs Chelsea

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp has heaped praise on one Arsenal player following the 1-1 Premier League draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The Gunners started the game with a 10-point deficit to leaders Liverpool and they had the opportunity to reduce the gap to seven by beating the Blues.

However, they were unable to do so with just three shots on target in over 95 minutes.

Martin Odegaard was the brightest spark for the Gunners. The Norwegian made his first start since late August for the club after recovering from an ankle injury.

The 25-year-old completed 92 percent of his passes in the derby with a crossing accuracy of 100 percent. He created four chances while making four recoveries.

Odegaard’s sublime cross behind the Blues defence contributed to Gabriel Martinelli’s goal. The Brazilian must also be credited for outsmarting the goalkeeper at his near post.

Speaking after the stalemate Redknapp was particularly impressed with the quality from Odegaard and said that Arsenal’s performances will go up now that he is back.

He told Sky Sports (via BBC Sport): “It’s quality from Odegaard [for the opening goal]. He plays a delightful ball into the far post. It’s a really good finish.

“Yes, the keeper could do better but I think you have to credit the finish. It shows you the Odegaard effect, Arsenal’s performances will go up and up now he’s back.”

Odegaard’s presence brought a lift for the Gunners yesterday. The Norwegian ace tried to keep a high tempo and demanded the ball from deep lying midfield positions.

He was not at his very best, having just returned to training, but showed what Arsenal have been missing. Odegaard was superb with his high work rate and chance creation.

No one expected Odegaard to play over 95 minutes in an intense derby, but the midfielder showed exceptional fitness levels which is a good sign for the Gunners.

The midfielder will now get a breather for the next two weeks as he won’t be with Norway on international duty.

Odegaard’s form could be pivotal for Arsenal during the forthcoming festive schedule as they look to close down the nine-point deficit to league leaders Liverpool.
