Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen leaves game vs. Blues with apparent ankle injury

One of the breakout stars of the 2018-19 season might lose some time due to an unfortunate stumble on the ice.

Just minutes after the second period started between the Colorado Avalanche and St. Louis Blues on Monday night, Mikko Rantanen appeared to injure his ankle after his skate got caught in the ice at a weird angle.

As soon as the blade of his skate touched the ice, it immediately forced Rantanen’s ankle to twist in a way that it’s not supposed to. Due to the injury, the top winger did not return to the game.

Per Adrian Dater, the Finnish forward will have an MRI scheduled for Tuesday in Denver. The rest of the club will continue their current road trip, heading to Las Vegas for a game against the Golden Knights on Friday.

With the spacious gap between games and the Avalanche returning to Colorado to face the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday, if the results come back negative, it could mean a return in the near future for Rantanen.

Through nine games this season, he has scored five goals and collected 12 points. Both of those totals tie him for the team lead with Nathan MacKinnon.
