Australian Open LIVE: Novak Djokovic beats Tomas Etcheverry plus latest scores and results

Novak Djokovic found his form at the Australian Open in a straightforward win over Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

The 10-time champion has been struggling with illness and was well short of his best in his first two matches, particularly a second-round clash with Alexei Popyrin on Wednesday that he was lucky to escape. But Djokovic, playing his 100th match at Melbourne Park, looked much more like his usual self in a 6-3 6-3 7-6 (2) victory over Argentina’s Etcheverry, who beat Andy Murray in the first round.

Elsewhere, defending women’s champion Aryna Sabalenka thrashed Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko 6-0 6-0, before Tsurenko spoke out in support of her homeland in the ongoing war after refusing to shake the Belarusian’s hand.

Coco Gauff also comfortably progressed, while 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva is also through to round four. In the men’s, Jannik Sinner, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Taylor Fritz all triumphed earlier on Friday. Home hero Alex de Minaur was a comfortable winner on Friday night, while Sebastian Korda plays Andrey Rublev in one of the day’s most intriguing matches.

Novak Djokovic finally finds his groove at Australian Open – the rest of the field will be trembling

14:47 , Kieran Jackson

For Novak Djokovic, that’s quite enough drama for week one. Usually so serene and at ease in the opening seven days of a Grand Slam, the ten-time Australian Open champion has teetered on the edge of an early shock so far in Melbourne.

Four sets in his opener against Croatian qualifier Dino Prizmic and four sets against home hero Alex Popyrin in the second round, when he was extremely fortunate not to be a set away from elimination.

No such concerns in the last-32, however. Argentinian 30th seed Tomas Etcheverry had seen off elder statesmen of the tour in Andy Murray and Gael Monfils to set up a night-time encounter under the Friday night lights. But men’s tennis’ epitome of top-tier longevity produced a statement straight-sets victory, 6-3 6-3 7-6(2). A statement which said to the rest of the field: business as usual.

Cameron Norrie out to break new ground at Australian Open

13:16 , Kieran Jackson

Cameron Norrie will have to break new ground in two ways if he is to keep British singles hopes alive at the Australian Open.

The 19th seed is the only British player to have reached round three but he has never been further at Melbourne Park, while he has lost all three previous matches against opponent Casper Ruud.

Indeed, Norrie has managed just one set, at the ATP Finals in 2021, while Norwegian Ruud also came out on top in meetings in Miami and San Diego.

Andy Murray hits back at tennis commentator to defend Mirra Andreeva at Australian Open

11:55 , Kieran Jackson

Andy Murray has leapt to the defence of Mirra Andreeva after the teenager was criticised during her third-round win at the Australian Open.

Andreeva roared back from 5-1 down in the deciding set to beat Diane Parry in a tie-break.

It continued an outstanding week for the prodigious Russian, who is through to the fourth round of a grand slam for the second time after a breakthrough performance at Wimbledon last summer. Murray was watching on as Andreeva completed victory, and utilised social media to question the criticism of the 16-year-old’s mentality.

Australian Open LIVE: Novak Djokovic, speaking on-court after his win:

10:56 , Kieran Jackson

“The best performance I’ve had in this tournament. He stepped it up and raised his level in the third set, we went toe-to-toe, but I found the right shots in the tiebreak.

Asked about his motivation: “Coming from Serbia in the 90s wasn’t easy. It was super expensive to play tennis, my parents did everything they possibly could to provide. I wasn’t traveling a lot in the junior days due to war and embargos.

“But when I reflect on my journey, it’s been an incredible blessing to be here and I’m very grateful.”

Djokovic pointing to his ear as he wins a spine-tingling opening point with a forehand winner down the line!

It sets the tone: a couple of amazing returns from Djokovic gives him a 3-0 lead. He dumps a forehand into the net for 3-1 before a big serve restores his three-point lead.

Djokovic has the final say before the change of ends, sending a backhand down the line that Etcheverry can only volley into the net.

Long way back for the Argentine now...

I have to say... Etcheverry has more than earned an opportunity to win this set in a breaker. Great fight from the Argentine, whose booming serve secures that game.

Another glimpse for Etcheverry at 15-30... firmly shut by Djokovic!

At 30-30, the Argentine sprints to the net to catch a drop shot and almost runs into the umpire’s chair!

Djokovic then seals the game with a backhand winner down the line. Still a game away from the match is the Serb.

It looks curtains for Etcheverry at 15-30. But an ace out wide, a solid smash at the net and a Djokovic error means we’re still all-square in this third set.

Fair play to the Argentine - he has refused to give up and is doing his best to try and match the level of Djokovic. He’s still in this third set.

Ridiculous point at 15-15, where Djokovic gets lucky with a net cord to effectively win it. The Argentine drags the game back to 40-30, before plumping a return into the foot of the net.

What a tremendous game from Novak Djokovic - and he wins the second set!

His level is so so good right now - he gets to 0-40 with his whole arsenal of shots on display and even though Etcheverry recovers to 30-40, a wild forehand from the Argentine means it’s two sets to love for Djokovic.

The biggest credit you can give to Etcheverry is that he’s staying in touch.

A gruelling rally at 30-30 is, surprisingly, won by Etcheverry as Djokovic goes wide on the forehand, before Etecheverry nets his forehand with the game on his racket.

It proves costly. Etehcverry double faults, handing a break point chance to the Serb - but a booming serve out-wide saves it!

But after a sublime Djokovic drop-shot, there’s no saving it this time as Etcheverry pushes his backhand just long. Advantage to the world No 1 early on.

Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko fails to shake hand of Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka: ‘They’re part of that war machine’

Aryna Sabalenka handed Lesia Tsurenko the dreaded double bagel at the Australian Open – but the scoreline did not bother the Ukrainian.

The defending champion’s 6-0 6-0 victory means she has cruised through to the fourth round in Melbourne for the loss of only six games.

At the end of the match there was no handshake, as has been standard between Ukrainian players and those from Russia and Belarus since the start of the war nearly two years ago, although the pair did both put their hands up to acknowledge each other.

“It’s very hard for me,” Tsurenko told reporters about going up against Russian and Belarusian players.

Australian Open: Emma Raducanu regrets ‘one-off’ as defeat shows promise

07:25 , Kieran Jackson

It was a three-set, three-hour marathon with a distinct trilogy of chapters. The ending was cruel, as Emma Raducanu battled a stomach bug and fought to stop herself from throwing up on court in a gruelling 6-4 4-6 6-4 defeat to China’s Yafan Wang at the Australian Open.

After feeling “weak” and “nauseous”, Raducanu faded at the start of the third but showed grit to battle back when others may have quit. Playing in just her fourth match after eight months out, Raducanu was encouraged by what she showed, rueful that she was struck by illness ahead of her second-round match, and hopeful it was only a “one-off”.
