Australian Open: Jodie Burrage beaten by Coco Gauff as Harriet Dart lets lead slip
Jodie Burrage's run at the US Open ended on Wednesday in defeat to third seed Coco Gauff.
The British no7 will leave Melbourne with her head held high after pushing a player ranked 170 places close across two sets, going down 6-3 7-5 on Rod Laver Arena.
Burrage, who considered retirement last year after injuries forced her to miss half the season, produced one of the finest wins of her career in the first round, beating French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean.
"It is one of those matches that Jodie [Burrage] would do really well to watch," Tim Henman said after the match. "The difference in her level throughout was massive. She was struggling with unforced errors, then she started getting some consistency and she has the firepower.
"She was dictating against one of the best players in the world, up 5-3 in the second set. Then suddenly the final four games ran away from her."
"She will take a massive amount from that and it will be a steep learning curve. Her best is good enough to compete but when it falls off the level drops too much."
British number four Harriet Dart has also bowed out, taking no18 seed Donna Vekic to three sets before bowing out.
Dart was looking to reach the second round of the Australian Open for just the second time and won the first set 6-4.
However, Vekic soon took control and won the second set without dropping a game before claiming the third set 6-2.
