Auburn defensive lineman Byron Cowart will miss the rest of the season after having an emergency appendectomy Wednesday morning.

“He did have an emergency appendectomy,” coach Gus Malzahn confirmed. “I don’t know the status of how long he’s out, but it went well and he’s recovering.”

Cowart, a sophomore and the former No. 1 overall prospect in 2015, has played in 10 games as a reserve. He has six total tackles, including one for loss, and has forced a fumble.

Cowart is the latest in a rash of injuries that has hit Auburn this season. The Tigers could be without as many as four starters for Saturday’s game against Alabama A&M, including running backs Kamryn Pettway (quad).

Other backfield members Kerryon Johnson (ankle), Stanton Truitt (ankle), Chandler Cox (leg) and Malik Miller (knee) have gone down with injuries and receiver Marcus Davis (shoulder) has been lost for the season.
