Atlético Madrid turn to Villarreal star in striker search

The powers that be at Atlético Madrid have shifted their attentions towards a star performer at La Liga rivals Villarreal, amid their ongoing search for a new centre-forward.

That’s according to Relevo, who point towards Alexander Sørloth as the player in question.

It has of course long been common knowledge that Diego Simeone and Atlético are on the hunt for fresh blood up top with a view to next season.

As much comes after Álvaro Morata opted to seek out pastures new, securing a return to Italy with AC Milan.

The favourite to replace Morata in Madrid, initially, was Artem Dovbyk, fresh off a Pichichi-winning campaign with high-flying Girona.

With a deal for the Ukrainian having now been completely ruled out, however, the Atléti brass have been forced to turn their attentions elsewhere.

And this search, it is understood, has since led the Rojiblancos to the doorstep of Alexander Sørloth.

As per a report from Relevo:

‘The new target is set: Alexander Sørloth. The Norwegian is the number one for Atlético de Madrid after ruling out the Dovbyk option.’

Talks have been kicked into gear between the parties, albeit with Villarreal having made clear that they are eager to keep hold of the club’s star frontman for at least one more season.
