Atlético Madrid star matches manager Diego Simeone in record books vs Girona
A leading member of the first-team ranks at La Liga giants Atlético Madrid on Sunday secured for himself a special piece of club history.
As much came by way of developments in the club’s meeting with Girona.
Atlético marked their return to action late last night, welcoming Míchel’s Girona to the Spanish capital for a highly-anticipated La Liga clash.
When all was said and done on a stellar evening’s work for the Rojiblancos, they emerged on the right side of an eventual 3-0 result, courtesy of goals on the part of all of Antoine Griezmann, Marcos Llorente, and Koke.
And it was the 2nd of this trio who, as alluded to above, also managed to etch his name into the Atléti history books on the night…
As revealed by statistician Fran Martínez of Relevo:
‘Marcos Llorente is the FIRST midfielder to score in the first two games of a league season with Atléti since (his manager) Diego Pablo Simeone did it in 1995. The year of Atlético’s double.’
