Dutchman De Roon spoke of his pride at a supporting banner hung up by Atalanta fans outside his home after news of his injury broke.
“I’m feeling a little better, the disappointment has passed a little,” he said in Tuesday’s press conference. “The banner outside the house this morning made me emotional. In recent days I have received extraordinary, incredible affection.
“Some good things have come from this difficult moment for me, I have messages from everyone and this gave me enormous pleasure.”
Coach Gian Piero Gasperini said: “I'm really sorry for him, for everything he's done. It's sad that he can't play in this final. He's never been injured in recent years, his first injury came on the eve of this final.”
Leverkusen, meanwhile, were not carrying any injury concerns heading into the final.
Florian Wirtz has been contending with a thigh issue of late but he is fit enough to start.
