Aston Villa vs West Ham LIVE!
Graham Potter’s first game in charge of West Ham has ended in defeat against Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round. Despite taking the lead after just nine minutes as Lucas Paqueta finished off a flowing move involving brilliant play from Crysencio Summerville, the visitors ultimately couldn’t withstand heavy pressure from the hosts.
In the space of five second half minutes, the tie was turned on its head. Firstly, Amadou Onana equalised as he took advantage of Lukasz Fabianski dropping the ball from a corner - that was awarded in rather controversial fashion - to nip in and poke home from close range.
Then Ollie Watkins put the ball on a plate for Morgan Rogers who made no mistake. The Hammers did create a couple of chances in search of an equaliser late on, both falling to Danny Ings but it’s a third round FA Cup exit for the Hammers who are back in action on Tuesday night against Fulham.

Costly slip in the second half. Seemed to injure himself by trying to head the ball on the ground, Phil Jones-style. A liability.
Max Kilman 6
Fine pass over the top for the opening goal but reacted too sluggishly for Villa’s second.
Ollie Scarles 7
“He’s one of our own,” sang the Hammers faithful about the 19-year-old on his first domestic start. A brave performance from the academy product, who delivered a dangerous corner in the first half.

The Villa supporters are making known their disdain for what they are watching from their side, and that is in part an inadvertent compliment to the way Potter's West Ham have played.
Well deserving of their one-goal lead and, as it stands, on the way to the FA Cup Fourth Round.

Superb defensive discipline by winger Summerville there, following Maatsen all the way and tracking back to tackle.

Well wouldn't you just know it. As soon as some good news comes along, it is followed by the bad. Fullkrug, who has missed so much of this season and saw a specialist in Germany and in England for an Achilles tendon injury, is off with what looks like a very serious left hamstring injury. Gutting for him and no doubt for Potter.
They'll definitely need a striker now!

Curious to see Summerville playing off the right rather than left. Kudus is in the middle, with Paqueta left. Potter already experimenting in his new role.

Why are Aston Villa wearing an all-black kit against West Ham
20:08 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne
Aston Villa are the home side tonight but they are not wearing their usual claret and blue kit.
Instead are playing in a special strip to mark their 150th anniversary, which is all-black and the crest is based on the one the club had in 1878.

FA Cup rule change
19:48 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne
The FA Cup rules have changed this season. Replays have been scrapped from the first round onwards, with a winner determined on the day of the ties.
So, if the scores are level after 90 minutes tonight, a period of 30 minutes of extra time will be played with a penalty shootout to follow if a winner can not be found in that time.
Roy Keane lays into West Ham
19:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne
Safe to say Roy Keane isn’t fond of what’s been happening behind the scenes at West Ham as he’s delivered his verdict on the appointment of Graham Potter.
"It seems an odd bunch at West Ham in terms of players and what goes on at board level, we see the way they treat managers," he said on ITV.
"They treat their managers really badly I think at West Ham, so it's a big job for him.
"The players look and odd group, they look like a difficult bunch to manage.
"Is it a good fit? I'm not so sure, time will tell."
Standard Sport's Dom Smith at Villa Park

A huge night for Ollie Scarles, who makes his first domestic start for West Ham and only the second start of his career, after a 90-minute appearance against FCSB of Romania in the Europa Conference League in November 2022.
That's some time ago now, and Potter clearly feels it's an opportune moment to hand another to a 19-year-old who has appeared twice off the bench in the Premier League this season. The West Ham faithful will hope he fares well at left-back.
Pre-match thoughts from Potter
19:35 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne
Graham Potter has explained how he’s been able to prepare the West Ham side for tonight’s FA Cup tie in such little time.
“We’ve had a day in the hotel today, so we’ve gone through some things,” he told ITV. “It’s been really good, the response has been brilliant, I can’t have asked fr any more in terms of how the players have taken on little messages.
“You can’t give too much because there’s not that much time.”
Aston Villa changes
19:30 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne
Unai Emery has also decided to freshen up his Aston Villa side for tonight’s cup tie.
There’s no Emiliano Martinez in goal or Lucas Digne at left-back as Robin Olsen and Ian Maatsen are handed runouts.
Meanwhile, Morgan Rogers is back after suspension and replaces John McGinn.

Graham Potter has made three changes for his first game in charge of West Ham.
Youngster Ollie Scarles is named in the starting XI as Lukasz Fabianski and centre-back Dinos Mavropanos replace Alphonse Areola and Jean-Clair Todibo respectively.

Unai Emery praises Graham Potter
18:30 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne
At the start of the week, Unai Emery would have been preparing to face a West Ham side coached by Julen Lopetegui.
Of course, he will be up against Graham Potter in the dugout tonight and the Spaniard has been signing the praises of his opposite number.
“Of course, West Ham, they have very good players. It’s a good club as well,” Emery told reporters. “It’s not good news when they are changing a coach, but it’s an opportunity for him.
“We are going to respect West Ham and we are going to respect him, because he was successful when he was coaching before here in England. He has experiences, and I think he is going to do good work.”
Potter on preparations
18:25 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne
Graham Potter hasn’t had long in the West Ham job and this had made preparations for tonight’s tie all the more interesting.
“There’s a recent history of success here, and that’s what we want to work towards,” Potter told reporters. “It’s only my first day, so meeting the players and preparing for tomorrow’s match against Aston Villa is the main focus right now.”

Graham Potter’s West Ham in-tray
18:15 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne
Graham Potter has a big job on his hands at West Ham after replacing Julen Lopetegui.
Potter has signed a two-and-a-half year deal to take over from the Spaniard, who was sacked on Wednesday after only six months in charge, and will get straight down to work as he bids to lift the Hammers after a difficult first half of the season.
Predicted West Ham XI
18:10 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne
Graham Potter is a tactically flexible manager, with West Ham having tended to play 4-2-3-1 under both Julen Lopetegui and, before that, David Moyes.
The fact the game is in a cup competition might tempt Potter to experiment, or he could name a strong first XI in a bid to reach the fourth round and open his West Ham account with a confidence-boosting victory.
West Ham predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; Wan-Bissaka, Kilman, Mavropanos, Coufal; Soucek, Alvarez; Kudus, Paqueta, Summerville; Fullkrug
Potter's message to West Ham fans
18:05 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne
Graham Potter has spoken of his excitement after being appointed as the new West Ham manager, telling supporters that he plans to develop a team they can be proud of.
Potter takes over from Julen Lopetegui, who was sacked on Wednesday after only six months following a poor start to the season with the club languishing in 14th place in the Premier League table, seven points above the relegation zone.

Aston Villa wins: 45
Draws: 36
West Ham wins: 40
The Hammers were beaten on their last visit to Villa Park in October 2023 but did win here the year prior with Pablo Fornals netting the only goal of the game.
Standard Sport Prediction
17:50 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne
West Ham will hope the so-called new manager bounce will propel them into the fourth round, but this Villa side is one to be feared - especially at home.
The FA Cup is famously unpredictable - or at least that is its reputation - but there has been little surprising about West Ham failings this season. The gulf between the two sides, even with Villa’s injuries, is significant and cup specialist Unai Emery should get the job done.
Aston Villa to win, 3-1.
West Ham team news
17:45 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne
West Ham could be without Jean-Clair Todibo following a rather pessimistic update about the defender following the City defeat. Emerson Palmieri also missed that game through injury.
Jarrod Bowen is facing up to two months out of action, though Lukasz Fabianski could return in goal.
Aston Villa team news
