Art Briles drops defamation suit vs. Baylor
Art Briles has decided to drop his defamation lawsuit vs. Baylor. Briles’ attorney said Wednesday the former Baylor coach wanted peace in his life. Really.
“[Baylor] overloaded him in an endless supply of money, lawyers, resources, and no restraints on anything they’ll do to achieve their goals,” Ernest Cannon told KWTX.
“Art wants some peace in his life for him and his family, and to put as much distance between him and his family and Baylor as he can, and I wholeheartedly agree with him.”
The move to drop the defamation lawsuit comes less than a week after a suit was filed alleging 52 sexual assaults were committed by “not less” than 31 football players from 2011-2014. The suit also includes the allegation that Baylor’s coaching staff set up women at the school to have sex with recruits on their visits to campus. If any of the allegations from the most recent lawsuit are truthful, it’d be hard to see Briles’ suit having much of a chance.
Briles’ suit targeted three regents for the school and a Baylor vice president for libel and slander. As part of it, Briles also claimed he was being prevented from finding another coaching job because of the allegations stemming from the sexual assault scandal at the school.

Briles was fired in May after an independent investigation into the school’s handling of sexual assault allegations. He was the only member of the football coaching staff removed from his position and replaced by interim coach Jim Grobe.
In September, Briles went on ESPN and declared he was “sorry” for what happened at Baylor under his watch, but it was unclear just what he was issuing the apology for.
