Arsenal vs Chelsea LIVE: Premier League result and reaction as Gunners’ run riot after White and Havertz goals

Arsenal moved three points clear of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table with a blistering 5-0 victory over Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta’s men dominated from the get-go but couldn’t make full use of a first 45 minutes of controlled play despite Leandro Trossard’s fourth minute opener. He was fed the ball by Declan Rice then smoked the ball home at the near post.

After the break, the Gunners turned up the heat with Ben White latching onto a deflected shot from Rice and Kai Havertz lifting a fine finish over the goalkeeper to put Arsenal clear. Havertz then added a fourth with a guided finish to the bottom corner before White volleyed a beautifully dainty pass from Martin Odegaard into the top corner.

For Chelsea it was a night to forget but Arsenal took advantage of playing first this week and now Liverpool and Manchester City must respond if they hope to avoid dropping points in the title race.

What next for Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino? Arsenal humiliation exposes a crisis from top to bottom

08:40 , Jamie Braidwood

As a former Arsenal player, Mikel Arteta could sympathise with Mauricio Pochettino as friends shared the touchline at the Emirates. Arteta was in the Arsenal side that lost 6-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in 2014, as Jose Mourinho took considerable pleasure in ruining Arsene Wenger’s 1,000th game in charge by handing out Chelsea’s biggest ever win over their London rivals. How times change. Now as a manager, Arteta admitted he had “all the sympathy in the world” for Pochettino after he inflicted Arsenal’s biggest ever win over Chelsea. “I’ve been on the other side as well,” Arteta said. “He’s doing a great job.”

Arteta recognised Pochettino’s plight and understood the questions that were about to come his way as Chelsea collapsed against the Premier League leaders. After Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester City ruled out any chance of winning silverware in his first campaign in charge, a humiliating night was a blow for Pochettino’s hopes of qualifying for Europe next season.

The manner of it still felt more significant than that. Chelsea are 9th and another defensive disaster took their goals conceded to 57, their most ever in a Premier League season, and with six games still to play. Their capitulation was the latest indictment of a squad that is short of characters and a recruitment strategy that lacks any sense. All of which comes after £1bn spent.

Chelsea are a mess from top to bottom, so what next for Mauricio Pochettino?

Arsenal’s statement night proves one thing about revitalised Premier League title challenge

09:09 , Jamie Braidwood

So much for this being one of Arsenal’s awkward remaining fixtures, not to mention the idea the title race was over. Chelsea had other plans for all that, precisely because they couldn’t implement any kind of gameplan of their own. They couldn’t do much at all.

It means that, on a night when Arsenal went three points clear at the top with a 5-0 victory that is maybe Mikel Arteta’s best performance yet, it is hard not to talk about Chelsea. Focus will be back on Mauricio Pochettino’s future. Focus should be on the wider running of this club. This was the humiliation that Chelsea had looked in danger of suffering for some time. So much, too, for the players stepping up in the absence of an ill Cole Palmer.

They were instead just trodden on by an Arsenal side that were completely in the mood. It was one of those where it could have been much worse for Chelsea, given the amount of chances that were missed in the first half alone. Kai Havertz, a player that Chelsea sold to make way for more untried youth in this almost inexplicable recruitment model, enjoyed a signature performance of his own. The German scored twice, as did Ben White, the victory becoming so routine for Arsenal that a defender not usually known for his finishing could amble forward. Leandro Trossard opened it all after just five minutes, to ensure the match was barely ever a proper contest in any meaningful sense.

Chelsea’s collapse at Arsenal was humiliating, inevitable, and their lowest point yet

Tuesday 23 April 2024 22:04 , Mike Jones

“This is Chelsea Football Club, not Cole Palmer Football Club,” Mauricio Pochettino declared on the eve of his side’s visit to Arsenal.

A little more than 24 hours later, the sight of Chelsea without their top scorer and player of the year was enough to send the majority of the away fans make the trip back across London more than 20 minutes from the end of this humiliating, dispiriting, London derby thrashing at the Emirates.

“I don’t want your shirt, I just want to fight for ours,” a young boy pleaded in the away end. Chelsea failed, spectacularly.

Mauricio Pochettino admits Chelsea ‘gave up’ in 5-0 thrashing at Arsenal

08:35 , Jamie Braidwood

Mauricio Pochettino said his Chelsea team “gave up” during their heavy defeat at Arsenal in the Premier League but refused to blame his players for the collapse at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal recorded their biggest-ever victory over rivals Chelsea with a 5-0 thrashing, as the Gunners went three points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

It was an embarrassing evening for Chelsea, as Kai Havertz scored twice against his former side and Pochettino’s side fell apart without top scorer Cole Palmer.

The defeat raised more questions around Pochettino’s future at the club, but the Argentine said the performance was a result of his young team’s “inconsistency” as it came just days after they were arguably the better team against Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals.

‘Men against boys’: Rio Ferdinand blasts Chelsea’s performance after embarassing loss to Arsenal

Tuesday 23 April 2024 22:42 , Mike Jones

Rio Ferdinand labelled Chelsea’s performance against Arsenal as ‘men playing against boys’ as Mauricio Pochettino’s side slumped to a 5-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium.

Leandro Trossard opened the scoring for the hosts after just four minutes before a brace each for Ben White and former Chelsea star Kai Havertz gave the Gunners a comfortable win.

Speaking on TNT Sports after the match, Ferdinand claimed that the Blues were way off the level they have been hitting in recent weeks.

Rio Ferdinand blasts Chelsea’s performance after embarassing loss to Arsenal

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino speaking to TNT Sports:

Tuesday 23 April 2024 22:34 , Mike Jones

“I think we started the game not so well. We concede the goal and then it was difficult for us to recover from this goal. I think in the first half we compete after 10, 15 minutes. We could not approach the game like we started in the first half and we didn’t compete the way we needed to compete and then when they scored the third it was easy for Arsenal to control the game.

“I think you need to be clinical. Like against Manchester City three days ago, we were not clinical and then today the same thing happened. Difficult performance because it is not nice to see your team play like this when you are mean to have full energy. After three days when you play a fantastic game against Manchester City, today we are disappointed with the performance.”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking to TNT Sports:

Tuesday 23 April 2024 22:31 , Mike Jones

“It is a big London derby and we know what it means for the fans. We will enjoy it and rest and get ready for the next one.

“What I would like is that the players can manage themselves in the dressing room. You have to leave them some space. They know what they are playing for. That’s what holds the team together. My role is to demand them and also in the right moments make them believe they can do it.

“We have a lot of games coming up. Let’s enjoy tonight and let’s go back to work.”

Reaction from Leandro Trossard

Tuesday 23 April 2024 22:22 , Mike Jones

“I think the early goal helped us and after that we played so well. We had a lot of chances and we turned them into goals. It’s a great night.

“They say clean sheets help you win games. We know if we score the goal we can win 1-0. But, obviously, we want to go for more. Today is the perfect night. I think everyone works so well and hard. I am really happy to be here.

“We can only do our own job and that’s winning games. We are on track now and we will try and win the rest of the games and we will see what happens.”

”We know we can score goals and today it was a quick game and it was important to put the ball away when we had the chance.

“It’s not just the defence keeping the clean sheets, the wingers track back as well.”

“I think what Mauricio is doing is really impressive, so I’m sure that he’s going to get them there.

“I think the journey of [us and Chelsea] are very, very different. Nothing to compare in my opinion. It’s a huge admiration for Mauricio because I’ve known him since 23 years ago and I really wish him all the best.

“He’s an incredible manager, he’s a huge leader and he will inspire the club to get what they want to get, that’s for sure.”

Can Chelsea earn European football?

Tuesday 23 April 2024 18:50 , Mike Jones

As for Chelsea, Mauricio Pochettino’s team can still end the season in the European places despite a topsy-turvy year which has seen them play far below their expected levels.

They are within reach of sixth-placed Newcastle United and could draw level on points with the Magpies if they win at the Emirates tonight. Not only that but victory would massively dent the hopes of their London rivals who are trying to win the league.

A win for Pochettino’s side would show that the manager is beginning to imprint his style onto the young squad and it would leave Chelsea in a strong position looking towards next season.

A win over Chelsea at Emirates Stadium would take them up to 77 points ahead of Liverpool’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Wednesday and Manchester City’s trip to Brighton on Thursday.

With a north London derby against Tottenham on the horizon, Mikel Arteta will know that his team cannot afford any slip ups this evening if they hope to maintain their title challenge.

Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League following their 2-0 win over Wolves on Saturday, and will take on a Chelsea side trying to break into the European places this season.

The Gunners sit top of the table, albeit only on goal difference to Liverpool, while favourites and defending champions Manchester City have a game in hand, and they will want to build on that narrow lead against Chelsea on Tuesday.

Against Wolves in the late kick off on Saturday, Arsenal dominated the game without ever taking full control, and the goals came at a good time, while Chelsea will be ruing another missed opportunity this season, when they missed key chances and were unable to reach the FA Cup final.

It was Chelsea’s second Wembley defeat this season, after losing in the Carabao Cup final to Liverpool, and ensures Mauricio Pochettino will finish his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge without silverware.

Chelsea have threatened to bring criminal charges against anyone found to have racially abused Nicolas Jackson in the aftermath of Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final loss to Manchester City.

In a statement they said: “Chelsea Football Club is disgusted by the racial abuse directed towards Nicolas Jackson via social media, following Saturday evening’s game.

“There is no place in society for any form of discrimination and we operate a zero-tolerance approach to any incident of this nature.

“The club will support any criminal prosecutions and take the strongest possible action, including bans, against any individual who is found to be a season ticket holder or member.”

Chelsea have threatened to bring criminal charges against anyone found to have racially abused Nicolas Jackson in the aftermath of Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final loss to Manchester City.

The 22-year-old striker missed a number of chances at Wembley as his side bowed out of the cup with a 1-0 defeat and was subsequently the target of abuse on social media.

The racist comments were left on an Instagram post he had made following last week’s victory over Everton, in which he scored his 10th goal of the season.

Martin Odegaard says Wolves victory is ‘massive’ for Arsenal

Tuesday 23 April 2024 18:00 , Mike Jones

Arsenal captain and midfielder, Martin Odegaard, says that the 2-0 victory over Wolves was ‘massive’ for the club after a tough week which saw them slip up in the Premier League and lose to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Writing in the matchday programme ahead of this evening’s clash with Chelsea, Odegaard said: “The result at Wolves on Saturday was massive for us - we had to respond after the previous two matches.

“It was really tough for us after the Aston Villa and Bayern games. The defeat in the league, then going to Germany and going out of the Champions League was tough. We were all really down and really disappointed after that, and it took a lot of energy from everyone, and a lot of commitment, to get ourselves back up.“We were all down after returning from Germany, but we knew that going into the Wolves game on Sunday we would go back on top with a win, so that was a massive motivation for us.

“We wanted to strike back, to make a statement that we are still here – that drove us on. We did brilliantly to do that because Wolves is a difficult place to get a result.

“To go away again, more travelling, and a quick turnaround – it was a tough challenge but we can be very proud of how we did it and the result we got on Saturday.”

Arsenal lost their first evening kick-off against Chelsea in the Premier League way back in March 1993. Since then they are unbeaten in 11 such games against the Blues with four wins and seven draws.

The Gunners have won the last three in a row.

Arsenal end a torrid week just where they need to be in Premier League title race

Tuesday 23 April 2024 17:45 , Mike Jones

A torrid week ends with Arsenal top of the table. There are worse places to be and they could be four points ahead of Manchester City before the champions play again. If the eventual verdict is that the last seven days costs Arsenal the Premier League as well as the Champions League, none of the damage was done at Molineux.

The footballing cliché is that it is the sort of win champions secure, an away win that was ground out in forgettable fashion; the likelier scenario may be that they end up as runners-up again. Yet if a response was required after the defeats to Aston Villa and Bayern Munich, Mikel Arteta got one: not so much in the quality of the performance but in the way Arsenal showed the resolve to avert suggestions their season is in meltdown.

Arsenal vs Chelsea early team news

Arsenal are one of the more fortunate Premier League sides when it comes to injuries and are only expected to be without Jurrien Timber, who sustained a serious knee injury on his debut in August.

Chelsea were dealt a blow in the build up to the game, with the news that Cole Palmer might not be available against Mikel Arteta’s side.

Christopher Nkunku is nearing a comeback, but the game against Arsenal might come too soon, with Robert Sanchez and Levi Colwill also close to full fitness. However, Reece James, Lesley Ugochukwu, Wesley Fofana and Romeo Lavia are on the long-term injury list.

Chelsea are in danger of losing back-to-back Premier League away games versus Arsenal for the first time since a run of three defeats at Highbury from 2001 to 2003.

Arsenal seem the more composed of the two teams but Chelsea been on the end of some remarkable wins this season and they could be set to influence the title race this evening.

Arsenal last lost consecutive league games at the Emirates Stadium in April 2022, and last did so without scoring in November 2020.

Their 2-0 loss at home to Aston Villa and couple of weekends ago was a shock to the system but the Gunners will be hoping to shift their mindset and get back on a winning run this evening.

Arsenal have cemented their place as London’s finest with the help of Chelsea cast-offs

Tuesday 23 April 2024 17:02 , Mike Jones

Between Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke wrestling over a penalty and the Senegalese’s semi-final misses at Wembley, there was actually some respite for Chelsea last week.

The prospect of their discards winning the Champions League had started to loom large; until one of them, Mateo Kovacic, missed his spot kick in Manchester City’s shootout defeat to Real Madrid on the same night, with Jorginho and Kai Havertz starting, Arsenal made a tame exit to Bayern Munich.

A day earlier, Chelsea’s Champions League-winning captain Cesar Azpilicueta had been taken off at half-time in Atletico Madrid’s loss to Borussia Dortmund; if Kepa Arrizabalaga goes on to win the competition for a second time, it will at least be as a substitute again. There is nothing too chastening for Chelsea there.

More from Poch on Jackson

Tuesday 23 April 2024 16:54 , Mike Jones

“This is normal, he is young,” the Chelsea manager continued on his assessment over Nicolas Jackson’s season so far. “He needs to deal with the pressure of playing for Chelsea with all the new things that have happened.

“He has increased his social media followers – before it was not too much and now in the Premier League it has increased and it’s how you deal with this situation.

“It is so important for him to adapt and to assimilate to all the new stimulation from the outside. We can not judge an end product – he’s potentially an amazing striker and step by step he is getting better and better.

“The first season is always difficult for all the players, even more so when you are a striker and you need to perform and score goals – and everyone expects you to score a goal with every single touch.

“I’ve said before, if we want the players to match the icon players here like (Didier) Drogba, if we compare, always he is going to lose. If we split the history of the club with the performance of the team and Jackson, I think he is doing fantastic.

“He is going to have all support because even if doesn’t score, he is fighting for the club, fighting for his teammates and the team, producing chances of himself alone.

“He is going to be better next season for sure, no doubt about that, and he needs to keep going.”

Pochettino believes Jackson has earned patience

Tuesday 23 April 2024 16:47 , Mike Jones

Mauricio Pochettino has reiterated his trust in Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson. The Senegal international arrived from Villarreal in the summer and has featured regularly in the Premier League this campaign.

He has scored 10 top-flight goals and and has integrated himself into Pochettino’s squad.

“Football is a dynamic system and you need to adapt to the circumstances. The circumstances are a young striker arrived from Spain and then different offensive players, like Christopher Nkunku or Armando Broja, were not available in a way that would allow him to rest.

“That’s why it’s unfair not to give him the praise or credit for the effort that he has been making. He was also involved in the Africa Cup of Nations and I think he has been doing a fantastic job for the team.

“We are going to give him all the support for him to be in the future calmer in front of goal and to increase the percentage of scoring goals.”

Pochettino’s Palmer update

Tuesday 23 April 2024 16:40 , Mike Jones

Cole Palmer is likely to miss tonight’s match against Arsenal but Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino says the club will assess whether he could potentially make a last minute recovery from illness.

“We need to assess [Tuesday],” said Pochettino of Palmer’s chances. “Today, no, I don’t believe he can be involved. Even if he will be good tomorrow, he may not be in a condition to play.

“With and without him, we believe that we can win. The most important thing is the collective. Of course he’s an important part of the team. He’s doing fantastic for us. But we have plenty of players that can perform and do the job.”

Premier League title race: Who has the best fixtures – Man City, Arsenal or Liverpool?

Tuesday 23 April 2024 16:32 , Mike Jones

The Premier League is heading for a classic title race, with Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal set for a three-way battle as the season enters the run-in.

A “painful” week in the Champions League and Europa League saw the Premier League’s top three teams all crash out of European competition at the quarter-final stage, as attention returns to the title race once again.

It comes as both Liverpool and Arsenal slipped up at home last weekend to leave champions City leading the way with six games to go. Pep Guardiola’s side are aiming to win a fourth league title in a row – a feat that has never been achieved in the history of English football, and the title is now in their hands.

Premier League ‘disppointed’ in Nottingham Forest comments over VAR

The Premier League issued a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying: “The Premier League was extremely disappointed to read the comments made by Nottingham Forest on social media yesterday, following its match against Everton.

“We note The FA has confirmed it will be investigating the club’s statement. It is never appropriate to improperly question the integrity of match officials, and the nature of these comments mean the Premier League will also be investigating the matter in relation to the League’s Rules.”

Arteta pleased with Wolves result

Tuesday 23 April 2024 15:48 , Mike Jones

Arsenal moved to the top of the Premier League again at the weekend with a comfortable 2-0 over Wolves and the manager was impressed with the way his team played.

The Gunners were knocked out of Europe last week by Bayern Munich and responded in style with Arteta saying: “It was really good, I really liked the performance, the result, the clean sheet but also the way individually and a team they showed they still have a step forward to make.

“We realised we want to be involved in big competitions, fighting for the Champions League, fighting for the Premier League, the level it requires, we have to do something special. You have to have that love to compete.”

Arteta agrees with Guardiola over hectic schedule

Tuesday 23 April 2024 15:41 , Mike Jones

“It’s not about us, Pep or myself, it’s about the well-being of the players,” Arteta said when speaking about how bust the schedule is becoming for teams that are also competing in European competitions.

“Especially when you are competing in European competition, everything has to be competed in the same way.”

He added: “You cannot have a team that hasn’t played for seven days or three days before and has more recovery time and you have to play in the Premier League or the FA Cup.

“It is not right. If you look at it any angle it’s not right. If you want to protect and you always talk about the players and the protagonists, let’s protect them and think about them and do everything we can to give them the maximum time so they can recover and they can maintain the show they put on every week.

“We stayed in Munich, I think we had two hours sleep, wake up and we started to talk about Wolves first of all and then understand what we had to do to win the game.

“The boys were unbelievable. You look at the amount of games we have played in the last few weeks, the type of games we have played and the attitude and the way they have run today is top.”

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta stood in unison with Manchester City counterpart Pep Guardiola in condemning the fixture schedule.

Guardiola said it was “unacceptable” that his side had to play an FA Cup semi-final less than 72 hours after being in action in the Champions League on Wednesday night as they beat Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday tea-time.

The Gunners’ plight was arguably worse as they were also in Europe on Wednesday night but had to travel back from Germany on Thursday following their Champions League exit to Bayern Munich.

Pochettino gave Arteta advice before Spaniard joined Arsenal

Tuesday 23 April 2024 15:20 , Mike Jones

Mikel Arteta sought the opinion of Mauricio Pochettino before leaving Manchester City as Pep Guardiola’s assistant to become manager of Arsenal.

“When I had to make a decision I asked him and explained the situation and he gave me some advice and he was needed,” Arteta said.

“I admire what he’s done in his career and he’s someone I’ve looked to because he was impactful to me in the most important stage of my career. As a role model I can’t pick anyone better.

“He doesn’t need to help me about tactics. The best influence he has had on me is the way he speaks about his life, his professionalism, his family and who he was as a figure in the dressing room and the passion and love he has for the game.

“That for me is the most important things which I learnt from him.”

When asked how influential Mauricio Pochettino was for Mikel Arteta when he was a professional player, the Gunners manager had nothing but praise replying: “He’s one of the most. I was 17 or 18 in Paris with no experience in professional football.

“He doesn’t like me saying it but to me he was like a father, he took me under his arm, he gave me incredible advice and protected me, he inspired me and I learned so much in our two years together.”

Pochettino addresses Cole Palmer’s potential absence

Tuesday 23 April 2024 14:49 , Mike Jones

Mauricio Pochettino has bigged up Chelsea’s chances of beating Arsenal this evening with or without Cole Palmer who is a doubt for the game.

“With or without Cole we always believe we can win,” said Pochettino, “The most important thing is the team and the collective. He is an important part of the team and is doing fantastic for us, but we are Chelsea and we have plenty of players that can perform and do the job.

“It is a good challenge in case Palmer is not available. It’s a good challenge for the teammates. If I am a teammate of Cole Palmer in his position or a similar position, I am going to be motivated to go there tomorrow and show this is Chelsea Football Club, not Cole Palmer Football Club.”

Arteta on Chelsea’s improvements

Tuesday 23 April 2024 14:42 , Mike Jones

Mikel Arteta spoke about Arsenal’s opponents tonight and explained how he feels the Blues have developed over the course of the season.

The Arsenal manager said: “They have made huge improvements. I think they deserve to be in a much higher position in the league, when you look at what they’ve done and what they’ve produced in games – they’ve reached a final, they’ve reached a semi-final, they could have been through.
