Arsenal clear-out continues as defender nears Lazio move
Arsenal’s clear-out in the summer transfer window is set to continue with Nuno Tavares nearing a move to Lazio.
Arsenal have accepted a loan offer with a mandatory purchase option in the region of €8m (£6.7m) for the left-back, who has spent the past two seasons on loan at Marseille and Nottingham Forest respectively. The 24-year-old struggled to make an impact at the City Ground last season with just five starts for Forest in the Premier League.
However, Lazio are prepared to offer the defender a route out of the Emirates and have reached an agreement to sign Tavares on loan with an obligation to make the move permanent. Arsenal have included a sell-on clause as part of the agreement, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Tavares signed for Arsenal from Benfica for a fee of £8m in 2021 and made 21 league appearances in his debut campaign before falling out of favour.
The Gunners are prepared to sanction his sale due to strong cover at left-back, where Oleksandr Zinchenko, Jurrien Timber and Takehiro Tomiyasu are all options, alongside the impending arrival of Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori.
Tavares’ exit continues a clear-out for Mikel Arteta following the releases of Cedric Soares and Mohamed Elneny.
