Angel Reese 'Heartbroken' After Chicago Sky Coach Teresa Weatherspoon Was Fired

"I’m literally lost for words knowing what this woman meant to me in such a pivotal point in my life. She was the only person that believed in me," Reese wrote on social media

Following the news that Chicago Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon had been fired from the team after just one season, rookie standout Angel Reese expressed her feelings on social media in a lengthy post.

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), Reese, 22, addressed Weatherspoon’s departure and noted how the former WNBA star and Hall of Famer believed in her from the start of her professional career.

“I’m heartbroken. I’m literally lost for words knowing what this woman meant to me in such a pivotal point in my life. She was the only person that believed in me. The one that trusted me. Many don’t even know what it’s like to be a black women in sports when nobody believes in you,” Reese wrote.

Reese then pointed out that the reason she landed with the Sky was because of Weatherspoon, 58.

“You had a tough job. All the crazy circumstances that we went through this year & when your back was against the wall, you always believed. I came to Chicago because of YOU. You were an unsung hero in my life. We built a relationship in a short amount of time that will last forever,” she continued.

Reese ended her post by adding, “You were the best reason & season. You didn’t deserve this but I can’t thank you enough. I love you Tspoon.”

On Friday, Sept. 27, the Sky franchise confirmed that it had fired Weatherspoon, who held the role as head coach since October 2023.

In a statement to the Associated Press, Nadia Rawlinson, Chicago Sky co-owner and operating chairman, said, "After careful consideration, we have decided it is in the best interest of the organization to part ways with Head Coach Teresa Weatherspoon.”

“We are deeply appreciative of Coach TSpoon's contributions to the Chicago Sky, and the energy and passion she brought to the head coaching role. We thank her for inspiring a competitive, resilient spirit across the team, synonymous with Chicago Sky basketball,” she continued.

Rawlinson added that the team already has plans to secure another head coach for the team. "We remain steadfastly committed to being a playoff and championship contender every year, and we will be embarking on a thorough search for our next head coach,” she said.

Before her short tenure with the Sky, Weatherspoon was named the full-time female assistant coach when she was promoted by New Orleans Pelicans head coach Stan Van Gundy to full-time assistant coach in 2020.

She previously served as a two-way player development coach for the team.

At the time, she joined Brittni Donaldson, Lindsay Gottlieb, Jenny Boucek, Becky Hammon, Sonia Raman, Lindsey Harding, and Natalie Nakase, as the eighth full-time female coach in the NBA, according to ESPN.
