“We are almost there” – Enzo Maresca issues major update on Chelsea teenager which will delight fans
Enzo Maresca has revealed Josh Acheampong is close to signing a new contract and will probably start against Astana on Thursday.
The Blues face a long trip to Kazakhstan for their fifth game in the Conference League having won their previous four to secure a place in the next round.
Maresca is set to pick a youthful squad and hand an opportunity to a number of youngsters, with a lot of first team regulars likely to be left behind.
Maresca issues Acheampong update
One player who seems like he will feature is Acheampong, who was frozen out by Chelsea in October with the Blues wanting him to sign a new contract.
The 18-year-old has missed out on a number of opportunities to feature for the first team due to the contract stand off, but he was spotted in training ahead of last month’s game against Heidenheim, although he didn’t make the travelling squad.
However, speaking ahead of the trip to Kazakhstan, where temperatures are set to be well below freezing Maresca has issued a major update on the teenager.
“He’s in the squad and is probably going to play from the start,” he told his pre-match press conference.
“With Josh, it’s quite clear, we all love Josh, the club love Josh and I love Josh. We are trying to find an agreement with the player. It’s close, we are almost there.”
It’s great news for Chelsea and it seems an agreement is now close, and with Reece James injured Malo Gusto is the only recognised right back in the squad currently.
