Alex Ovechkin and father spend special moment with Stanley Cup

It was 13 years in the making, but Alex Oveckin and that giant piece of silver hardware he’s been chasing his entire NHL career made their way to Moscow this weekend.

Alex Ovechkin spent his official ‘day with the Stanley Cup’ (though it does really feel like he’s already had about 12 days or so with the dish, but that’s neither here nor there) in his native Russia on Saturday, and through all the blackout-yielding, caviar-eating, keg-standing, party-hopping times Ovi and the Cup were a part of during the 24-hour rip, it was a slightly-less belligerent moment that delivered all the feels.

With the help of his not (yet) hungover son, Ovi’s father, Mikhail, who stayed back home in Russia during the Capitals’ playoff run, raised the cup over his head for the first time while a group of family members, friends and reporters watched on. It wasn’t the only back-to-his-roots journey that Ovechkin would take the Cup on that day, as he also brought the trophy to the TVB Ice Palace — home of his former KHL/Russian Super League team.

It was there where he went for another lap with the Cup before posing for some more photos with his father on the ice surface where it all started for a 16-year-old Ovechkin in 2001.

Hopefully the league has a durable pair of oversized pliers ready to pry that thing away from Ovechkin and his Capitals teammates before the regular season kicks off in October.
